how to change little 'symbol' when importing a large POI file?

Hello.

I imported the list of campgrounds here

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41987

But each symbol on the map is a little blue 'flag'.

Is there a way to change all the symbols to a little GREEN TENT?

There are nearly 20,000 of them so not practical to do one by one.
(I have them all in a separate list in Basecamp)

Similar issue w/ the list of Diners, DriveIns and Dives POI file. Each is a little blue flag and not a restaurant symbol like a fork and knife. Would like to change those too if possible. Just not sure how to change them all at once? (they are all in a separate list just like the campgrounds)

Thanks.

I tried 'selecting all' then

I tried 'selecting all' then right clicking 'open' but when I change the symbol from a flag to the symbol I want, Basecamp haaaaaaangs and then crashes every time.

Thanks.

There

There is a .bmp file at the same location you downloaded the campground file from:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41987

I suspect there is a .bmp file where you got the Diners POI file as well.

You need to follow the instruction at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4359

in order to see the custom icons that you will download.

Find the symbol you want to see displayed, shrink it down to the appropriate size and give it the EXACT same name as that of your campgrounds file, except with a .bmp file type.

There are several factory strings that talk about the requirements for the .bmp file.

The OP

The OP has a Zumo which may do things a little differently than our auto units. By stating he has a flag, it may be the POI were not loaded correctly but are in Favorites which is a destination rather than a POI location.

To clear the mess, I would begin to look for what is in Favorites and if the campgrounds are there, then a complete cleaning of the Zumo may be needed to eliminate all the entries.

Basecamp and symbols.

F150HD asked about Basecamp I believe. I have the same problem, Basecamp has it's own icon set and they are not the same as the Nuvi's. This group has info on how to install them (don't know the link). Other than opening the POI file in Basecamp then changing the "Blue Flag" to the icon of your choice I do not know a way to set up your icons. I find that I can get them changed if I do them in batches of around 100 at a time. If any one knows a better way please tell us!

Recreated OP's reported problem

If I'm understanding F150HD, his concern is with the symbols seen in BaseCamp. It appears the default map pin is a blue pennant. I downloaded the referenced campground file in his post and converted it to a .gpx in order to import it into BaseCamp. Selecting all, an attempt to change from the blue flag to the green tent caused BaseCamp to choke. I tried this on a Mac, so this likely rules out a hardware and OS and an app installation problem. I then repeated with the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives file with the same result. I then tried a KOA file and it worked but has <500 POI, where the other 2 exceeded 1000.

I then tried to select a smaller selection size of the large campground file, selecting the 1st 999 in the list and it failed. I then tried selecting the same number as were in the KOA file (485) and it also failed.

My suspicion at this point is that BaseCamp has a hard time working with even a portion of a large file when attempting to change the map pins.

One solution that worked for me

EPE only works with Windows so this solution rules out folks running OSX without BootCamp/Windows or Parallels. I opened the .gpx version of the large campground file in EPE: Edit, Replace Field, Symbol and then entered "Campground" (without the quotes) into the New Field Value box, and then Replace all. This placed the desired green tent symbol into all of the 21,000+ POI included in that file. I then saved it and imported it into BaseCamp and the map is obliterated with little green tents. Restaurant could similarly be used for the symbol field in the Triple-D file and would then show a knife and fork.

Thank you!

Used EPE to change all the blue flags for Tourist Attractions to a little dot. Now I can see the map again! Thank you.
