Smart Link does not work between my iPhone and NuviCam. I get frequent disconnects. I have ZERO issues when only going from my iPhone to NuviCam when only the phone is connected via Bluetooth and not Smart Link.
Please share your configuration, especially if yours works. Here is mine.

I use Smart link app on iphone 6 with Nuvicam. Bluetooth has always been issue on Nuvicam. I don't use Bluetooth connection for phone calls on Nuvicam. Recently, it started connecting to iphone for phone calling. So I just deleted Bluetooth connection on my phone and just kept the BLE connection for data. Now it works lot better for traffic and weather etc. As long as smart link app is open, it connects without any issues. I use Blueant Commute speaker phone for phone calls in my car.
Smart link does not work on my Android tablet. It only works on smart phones.

True, it requires a data connection (cellular), so it is not compatible with wi-fi only tablets like my Samsung Note 8.0
Mine works just fine with my 2797 and Iphone 6.

No, I have a LTE tablet (Nexus 7 LTE).
It has a SIM card in it and can do Cell-data.
I use my LTE iPad with SmartLink via Bluetooth to my 3597. The connection would drop seemingly at random with Initial versions of SmartLink. A few SmartLink updates ago it started to work as advertised and I've been very happy with it since.
Well I thought I had a solution to getting cellular data to my NuviCam.
I also have a FreedomPop android phone and the NuviCam had no issues adding it as a second Bluetooth device and as data only. Weather and traffic was working great!
Then I found that if I use "Voice Command" I can not search my iPhone contacts to make a phone call by speaking the contacts name. I can do call history, just not a name search.
This setting was found in the nuvi 3597 but is probably on all Garmin devices that support Smartphone Link:
There is a Smartphone Link setting on the GPS Home Page in Apps/Smartphone Link - a check box for Hands-Free Calling. It is checked by default so I unchecked it. This is for the Garmin device to handle hands-free calling. I do not use it since my car audio does that.
Perhaps this setting is interfering with speaking the contact name to the iphone.

In my opinion, all Garmin GPS devices newer than this will be compatible with Smartphone Link.
Relating to Dobs108's post about Smartphone Link enabled devices, the 2017 Drive 61 LMT-S is a curiosity. All of the other low end Drive 51/61 models do not support Smartphone Link, so I presume they do not have Bluetooth for hands free calling or other functions. But since the 61 LMT-S supports Smartphone Link, we have to assume it has Bluetooth capability. Yet in the user manual, there is no mention that I could find of hands free calling. If anyone has this model, it would be interesting to hear exactly what capabilities this model has
After pairing and app is installed on I phone.
Settings/General/Background apps Refresh
Turn on Background app refresh
Make sure Garmin Smart Link is turned on
I turned off all the other apps, individual choice
When I did this I always had gps connect to I phone and Garmin Smart Link with no drop offs and always when powered up.
