Incorrect Garmin Routing

Hi all. I am a bit frustrated why my Garmin lm58 would take me the long way around to a poi. I have a poi about 2 miles off a main highway but instead it will take me 70 km around then in.. i have tried to (check, uncheck) every possible navigation option like aviod toll roads or unpaved or uturns or ferries. Tried everything'.. its just as if the 2018 map update is missing that one little 2 mile gravel road going in.. thanks so much who have replied.

Well ...

I guess because it IS missing that little bit of road, does it show on the map? Are you able to tell us the location of that one POI?

Move the POI Location

If that little 2 mile road does not show on the 2018 map update, the GPS will navigate to the closest point it can find to the POI. The best fix is to move the POI to the point where that little 2 mile road joins a main road that does show on the 2018 map.

You can report the error to HERE and hopefully, it will show up on a future map update:

Robert, if you will post the coordinates of your destination here and describe generally where you are coming from and where it apparently misses the turn, we should be able to recreate that on ours in simulation mode to see if we can determine what is sending you the long way around. Did it work correctly before the 2018.10 update? Without knowing for certain, my initial guess is that there is a small break in the continuity of the side road in the map, it may not show to connect to the main road or it may cross a small creek and the bridge is missing.

Ok.. ok my location on map is lat: 55.4331 long: 118.5300 and the destination poi I want to hit is 55.3723 118.1920 which is only about 35 km away but gps takes me 105 km around.. if i could upload a photo of the circle it takes me I would

Garmin routing

It is suppose to make a turn on 55.577741 -118.388071 but it's not, it passes there and goes down that highway about 40 km then east about 15 km then back north on a Gravel road 40 km. Thanks for reading

Sorry

Those aren't making any sense to me, they're east of Grand Prairie in Canada, are they lat/long positions?

I agree

My 1st question is how did you obtain your Lat/Long coordinates? Are they from a source that is published in other than WGS-84? WGS-84 is the model used by Garmin and most other GPS units.

Your profile indicates you are located near Wanham, located in Alberta.

Using Google Earth for simplicity, I used the coordinates of your origin, 55.4331 -118.5300. They do appear to be in western Alberta at a spot near some buildings on the north side of Township Rd 744 east of the junction with Range Rd 43 about 44 km south of Wanham. Then using 55.3723 -118.1920 as your destination, it points to a spot in a cultivated field east of Smoky River on the west side of Range Rd 21. There is no discernible way to cross the Smokey River other than Route 43 at Bezanson to the south or Rt 49 to the north at Watino. Given these coordinates, the shortest route is the bridge on Route 43 and is about 65 km. Using 55.577741 -118.388071 as your turn or waypoint, places a pin at the intersection of Township Road 762 and Township Road 733. As for driving, this add a U-turn north of the origin and now the route is almost 99 km. As your waypoint appears at a valid intersection, I believe this is a good set of coordinates for WGS-84 as this is the same datum Google Maps uses.

Assuming the waypoint to be valid, the coordinates given for your origin and destination don’t fit and that is why I believe they are from a source that uses a different datum and may be the reason for the route being different from the one you want to take.

To confirm, open Google Maps on your browser and locate your origin (or destination) my zooming in on the map and then clicking on the spot. The coordinates will be displayed, I suspect they may be different from the ones you posted.

Just post it on something like Photo Bucket, then put the link in your POI Factory post so other members can take a look see.

I have a problem with correct Garmin routing in Texas because the Garmin maps are inaccurate. There has been so much construction in the Dallas area that Garmin is not aware of new roads and still lists discontinued ones.

You might want to take a careful look to make sure the Garmin map matches reality.

Emails to Garmin on map corrections usually work.
