I ran across this when attempting to update my FAQ on Garmin Software change logs. I found the link for the new Drive 51 and DriveSmart 51 and it reads:
Drive and DriveSmart 51 software version 2.60
as of January 24, 2017
Use WebUpdater to install this file.
Use WebUpdater? Does that mean Don't use Garmin Express? Garmin never fails to surprise me. Go figure!

Or ...

Odd!
It certainly is odd. From the following list of updates, all of the Drive models are being sent to Garmin Express except for the one you found from January and the new February 6 DriveAssist 50 v5.10 update directing users to WebUpdater:

errors.
The Garmin web pages for these devices say to use Garmin Express for updates, so I will have to agree with sussamb that these examples must just be errors on the change log pages.

If it ain't broke...
Full disclosure: I have an old Nuvi 1450 and until recently, a pc with Windows 7.
Within the past 10 days I bought a new pc that has Windows 10, and as part of the migration process, I downloaded and have USED all of the Garmin POI programs EXCEPT Garmin Express. (I'm old and prefer to use things that have worked for me in the past.) Anyway, since I got Windows 10, I downloaded and USED WebUpdater, MapUpdater and POILoader all without problem. From the occasional comments about the strange things that Garmin Express does or doesn't do, I see no reason to go to GE. Again, I have an older Garmin, but for me the pre-Garmin Express programs continue to serve me flawlessly.

It would be interesting...
It would be interesting to hear from an owner of a Drive and DriveSmart 51 and a DriveAssist 50 who tries using Garmin Express today.
The links to Garmin 'Updates & Downloads' provided in this thread would never be found by me without the Polish web site http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/recent-updates and I doubt that I'm alone in thinking how difficult it is to find these. Most folks are going to use what they always have used in the past to obtain updates, either Garmin Express or WebUpdater.
PS: alandb, how did you happen upon the Garmin link?
PPS: I can't disagree with you, plunder, given your device. For completeness, owners of some newer models should be careful if using GarminMapUpdater:

me too!

PS: alandb, how did you happen upon the Garmin link?
of course. I was actually looking for DriveAssist 50 which I had inadvertently left off the list, and my search turned up the Drive/DriveSmart 51 update link.
But I then found the other new 2017 model links thanks to your gmaptool link Craig ... so thanks for that. I am surprised there are software change logs on devices that aren't even released yet.

Now it is even more weird.
Garmin released new software 5.20 for the 2016 Drive models yesterday. And now for the DriveAssist 50, they don't say "Use Garmin Express to install this file". They don't even say "Use WebUpdater to install this file." Now they are saying to download the .GCD file directly with these weird instructions:
DriveAssist 50 software version 5.20
as of March 1, 2017
Serial Port

maybe they hire former weather forecasters
It certainly is odd. From the following list of updates, all of the Drive models are being sent to Garmin Express except for the one you found from January and the new February 6 DriveAssist 50 v5.10 update directing users to WebUpdater:

Weather forecasters can be wrong most of the time and still get paid. Mybe Garmin has hired some of these.
DriveSmart 65, NUVI2555LMT, (NUVI350 is Now Retired)
still use the serial port
Ancient history.
I still use a serial cable for my Garmin GPS 76 - a portable marine unit. There hasn't been a software update in some time, but I use it to edit the waypoints (the same thing as POIs).
Recently, when using a new PC with no serial port, I bought a serial-to-USB adapter because I like the latest technology. The serial cable operates slower than USB-1, but the waypoint list uploads in seconds!
