Garmin "recent" files where are they stored

What do you mean by "recent files"? For Garmin software versions, they in general only make the current software version available and offer it through Garmin Express or Webupdater. For older versions of Garmin device software, many of them are available on the legendary "perry" site, which is not affiliated with Garmin: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/agree.html

He may be referring to the Recently Found locations. I believe those are in protected memory.

On the Nuvi 57LM bottom right it has a cat. recent. I am assuming that the info is stored some where, thanks again

you don't. Protected memory is ... well ... protected and not accessible by the user. The only thing I can think of is to select each recent item on your old device, save it as a Favorite or Saved Place, then transfer the saved places to the new device.
