Free Garmin unit

I recently tried to update my Steetpilot c530 to the latest Garmin maps but was unable to. I contacted Garmin on the matter and they told me that my unit is not compatible with the new map updates. They told me that Garmin was offering a free update program for older units with had lifetime maps installed. All I had to do was send them my old unit. They offered me the option to have a Nuvi 57lm or 58lm. I originally chose the 58lm, but then I found out it didn't have lifetime traffic which my c530 did. After a little negotiation, I received a Nuvi 58lmt for $21 more dollars more. Now I have a new, up to date unit. Bigger screen, more features etc. Awesome work Garmin!

This is the first time I have heard about Garmin offering a free upgrade to Street Pilot owners that have purchased a lifetime map subscription. I wonder if you just happened to get a support rep that was feeling generous or if the free replacement is an official Garmin policy? It will be interesting to hear if any other SP owners are offered the free upgrade deal. If I had a SP with lifetime maps (I don't), I would call them to see what they would do.

A few years ago I posted here on POI Factory about an offer for a free Garmin unit. If you applied for a Discover MILES card you got a free unit. People here poked fun at me and didn't believe it was true. Later when I posted that my free Garmin had arrived people wanted to know more but, by then, the offer was over. Sometimes it pays to check it out. If I had an older Street Pilot I would definitely be calling Garmin...

@Thrak ... I assume you are referring to this thread from 2008: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16082. That appears to be a promotion by Discover Card, not by Garmin itself. But in any case I agree that for Street Pilot owners, it would be worth a call to Garmin to find out.

Good for you. Is it a Streetpilot vs changed map format that caused Garmin to provide an upgrade due to "lifetime" maps being hosed.
