DELETE ALL POI FILES

Hello!

I am a total dummy when it comes to POIs and my Garmin. I have a Garmin nuvi 3597! A while ago, I loaded POI files into the 3597.

Is there a way to delete ALL of the POI files from the 3597 that I have loaded in the past, so I can start fresh?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Mike

Launch POI Loader

On the 1st screen you will see a button to remove all previously installed POI.

Followup Question

Hi!

Are you referring to the first screen of the POI LOADER?

Or

Or just attach the Nuvi to your computer and find the POI folder on the device. Inside that folder delete all files that have a .gpi extension.

Thanks all!

Delete POI's

If you are comfortable using Windows Explorer, don't know the Mac version, then delete the ***.gpi files in the POI folder.

If not then use POI loader and on the first screen delete any POI's.

One of the reasons ...

that some members suggest using Explorer to search for, and then delete .gpi files is to get rid of .gpi files that may have been copied/moved to the device and not have wound up in the folder that POI Loader uses when it creates POI files.

If you have never done this, then POI Loader is the most straightforward way to accomplish what you want to do.

Good point

It's not generally realised that your device will read gpi files from wherever they are on your device, not just from the POI folder. That's often led to confusion in the past smile

gpi files

not to step on the original post . can you copy/paste a gpi file to garmin and it will work ? I just created poi folder and pasted gpi file in there ( that ok ? )
mike

gpi files

Short answer yes.

If you put the GPI file in the folder on the Garmin where you custom POI are normally loaded, then POI Loader can erase them.

That will work

There are a few users (not a lot) that use poi loader and put the .gpi on their computer and then move them to the device.

POI loader

The way I do it is to have three folders on my HHDD
Since I also update the 3790 for my daughter I have one folder for each of the GPS's. All the Poi's are in these folders with either BMP or JPG, WAV or MP3 files depending on each GPS's requirement.
Each folder has two sub-folders for RLC and Speed camera.
Then I just direct POI loader to the respective folder's.

1.) 855
2.)2797
3.)3790

I also have 3 nuvis that I do the maintenance for. Malaqueman has described an approach that I wish I had thought of. Mine will be a variation, of course, but the central point is "loading" the Custom POIs to the computer and then copying them to the devices.

I use POISync whenever I decide to update the POI files that we use for our devices. Now my daughter and my grandson and I would not ever agree on which POI files to include in Custom POIs, but neither of them object to my including POI files that I alone want so long as the POI files they want are included.

So, rather than looking at "My Favorite Files" to see if there are any updates to our set of POI files, and then downloading only those that have changed, I simply let POISync download them all into a folder named POISync on my computer. If, since the last time I used POISync, I have decided that I want a new POI file in our "set", I first have to update the "Control File" POISync uses before doing the download.

I use"Categories" to arrange our Custom POIs and make it easier to locate a specific POI. My top folder is names "MyPOIExpress". The "category" folders are named
#food_lodging
%Stores
@Other
-Auto Stuff

Within each of these "category" folders are the last used .csv or .gpx POI files as well as any .bmp or .wav files I determined I wanted to use. (Note: while I do have a nuvi 765 which will accept a .mp3 file, the other devices require .wav. So, I have standardized on .wav files)

There are some files which I want to add a "proximity" to so I use EPE to do that - generating a .gpx file.

I use a two-pane Explorer-like package to move the just downloaded files to their proper place in the "category" folders.

The AHA moment was what Melaqueman points out - run POI Loader once (directing the output to my computer) - then "move" the file "MyPOIExpress" to each device.
