POI Download to Garmin C330

I'll preface this with an admission of being a newbie. I have the poiloader.exe from Garmin downloaded and installed on my PC, and the file for the redlight_cameras. Then I plug my C330 into the PC (via USB), turn it on, and then request the download (on the PC) to the Garmin unit and nothing happens.
Am I missing a step somewhere? I cannot find any instructions on how to do this.
Thanks, in advance... G-T-S

What do you mean by "request the download"?

You need to RUN the POI Loader program.

Point the program to your GPSr.

Then point the program to the location on your PC where you have put ALL your POI files.

The POI Loader program takes the all POI information and compiles it to create a file called POI.GPI. This is the format needed so the GPSr can read the data.

POI Download

"request the download" means I opened the gStart by right-clicking the small icon in the lower-right tool bar on my PC. The next option is download POI, so I hit start; expecting that the files I've placed in the POILoader.exe file will download.

How do you do the pointing that you mention above?

Forget about gStart.

If you have installed the POI Loader program on your PC, RUN that program.

[If you haven't installed the program, you need to run the program you downloaded (which is the installation file) in order to install the program to your PC. Then run the actual POI Loader program.]

Connect your GPSr to your PC.

In the POI Loader program window, you will get a screen that says "Welcome". Click "Next". The next screen is Device Settings. Where is says Find Device, be sure that you "point" it to your GARMIN drive (meaning your GPSr). Click "Next".

The program will ask you what you want to do. Select "Install New POI's onto your device". Click "Next".

Click the "Browse" button to "point" the program to the folder where you have placed your POI files. Select Manual or Express. Click "Next".

If you have selected "Express", the program will run using the defaults and built in information.

If you have selected "Manual", the program will give you the opportunity to set proximity and speed alerts for each of your POI files.

Continue selecting "Next" until you get to Finish.

POIs need to be in a folder on your PC

In addition to what MM said, the downloaded POI or POIs need to be located in a folder on your PC, not on your desktop. With POI loader, you point to the folder that the POI is located in, not to the POI itself.

Download to C330

I did exactly as you said, including reloading the poiloader, but I didn't get the same prompts as you listed. I got: Welcome (clicked next), Agreement (I agreed and clicked next), then it extracted/loaded and the only next prompt was for Done (clicked Done).
Next, a window opened showing a file foler for POIloader.exe (but it's empty) plus the other extension files... but none of the prompt chain that you indicated. Have I got the wrong loader?

Check

I have it in My Documents.

Next step

Now that you have the poiloader program installed on your PC, you need to run it. Go to Start, all Programs, Garmin and you will see the poiloader program. Select it and you should be okay.

Again, now that you have INSTALLED the POI Loader program, you need to RUN that program not the installation program.

Find where you installed it to. Maybe look for a shortcut on the desktop or on your Start menu.

Still No Joy!

Well, I've tried all that you and MM suggested; so maybe there's a problem with my GPS. I'll try finding another solution (including back to the store where I purchased it from). When I find out what's wrong (including that it may very well be me), I'll let you know what happens; in the event that it may help others who are just starting out.
Thanks very much for the help folks.

Did you check the Garmin Folder?

Just for clarification, did you check to see if you had the Garmin Folder installed on your PC? Also, was the POI Loader program installed there? If so, what happened when you ran it?

The fact that you can't get POI Loader to run properly doesn't have anything to do with your GPSr. You are not getting that far.

Before you go about returning your unit, you might want to retrace your installation steps with POI Loader.

Tips to remember. The POI Loader file you downloaded from Garmin is the installation file not the program itself.

This file needs to be RUN in order to install the POI Loader program onto your PC.

You MUST install the program to the Garmin folder in the C: drive of your PC.

Then once the program is successfully installed, you need to go to the program icon or shortcut cut that was created for the program.

The file you downloaded from Garmin no longer comes into play. In fact, you can delete if it is confusing the issue.

Double click on the program icon in order to run the actual POI Loader program.

The program will run whether or not you have your GPSr connected to your PC.

Then follow the steps.

The Garmin folder is

The Garmin folder is present, on my C drive under Program Files. When I double-click it open, there are two other file folders titled PoiLoader.exe, and USB Drivers, plus several files: CondMgr.dll (4.0.0.1 Palm Shared Library), gStart_Lang.dll (2.3.0.0 gStart English), LICENSE (12 KB), NOTICE (1 KB), PoiLoader? (Compiled HTMS Help File, 57 KB), and POILoader_Lang.dll (2.4.1.0 PoiLoader English).
When I open the filefolder PoiLoader.exe, it is empty and nothing happens (irrespective of whether the GPSr is connected to the PC). The USB Drivers folder contains all drivers. I've double-clicked each of the icons ouside of these folders, as well as those inside the Drivers folder to see what would happen, but none are the program run execute.
I also tried copying the Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values file for "Redlight-Cameras" (188 KB) both inside of the filefolder for PoiLoader.exe, as well as outside of this folder (amongst the other icons), plus sitting within 'My Documents'. Sorry to seam so thick, but I'm just not getting it, I guess.

G-T-S

.

Now you are confusing me.

There shouldn't be a FOLDER named POILoader.exe. There should be a program file (an APPICATION) named POILoader.exe. Check to see that it says that it's an APPLICATION.

If the program was installed properly, when you double-click on the POILoader.exe APPLICATION it should RUN.

If it's opening like a folder, something is wrong. I would try completely deleting POI Loader and re-installing it from the installer program.

You can't copy your POI files to the POILoader.exe. That's not how it works.

You must RUN the program and allow the program to compile the POI files into a form that your GPSr can understand.

[Oh, and just one correction to something that I wrote that isn't directly related to your problem. I wrote that POI Loader needed to be in the Garmin folder on your C: drive. That's true for MapSource, but it's not true for POI Loader. It needs to be in the Garmin folder, but it can be installed on other drives.]

File Folder

It's a filefolder, not an application icon. So, I'll delete the whole thing and download it again from Garmin. Mind, I've already downloaded 4 times and it comes back the same each time; but I didn't remove it prior to downloading it the subsequent times. Here goes...

G-T-S

G-T-S Hang in there buddy;)

I know that this may be really frustrating for you, but keep in mind that someone else reading this in the future will get a giggle because they will see that they are doing the same thing that you did and eventually when the solution is found you will be helping them save these steps. I guess that the term for this certain misunderstanding between human and computer will now be called "pulling a G-T-S" wink

Thanks to everyone that is working with G-T-S, it really shows what a supportive community we are.

Miss Poi

Eureka!

I deleted all of it and reloaded again from the Garmin site, and it worked just as MM said it should. I now have the Redlight-Cameras file loaded into my GPS.
Grace and I thank all for your help (especially MM), from the bottom of our chip and heart. BTW, "Grace" is the name my wife affectionately gave to my GPS, since previous to getting it I only arrived places by... (yep, you guessed it) the grace of God.
Thanks again,

G-T-S
