Garmin 2017.10 voice command error?

Updated on April 19, suddenly, voice command shuts device down as soon as you ask it to do anything. Can post a video showing what it's doing if necessary. 4 days ago, on 2016.30, never had an issue.

Call Garmin, and of course, it's not a problem with their code or software version (8.20) or map file, it HAS to be my device. When asked if I can revert/downgrade back to 2016.30 to verify, of course I can't.

I'm extremely cynical at this point that there's an issue with a device working properly 4 days ago, and the only change was this map update and now I need to buy a new device or spend $130 buying the same model I own, especially if I can't revert back and verify it also fails on previous versions! Coming from IT, I know software engineers are extremely hesitant to admit an issue in their coding.

Again, I have no issue spending for a new device if in fact mine has an issue, but without solid proof and no clear path to downgrade for that proof, I'm not handing money over on their word alone.

I've turned to this community in the hopes that someone A.) has a successful path to revert back, or B.) has a similar issue and can lead me down the path on how to resolve it myself.

Maybe I've discovered a real issue here that Garmin wants to turn their nose up to... maybe it really is something in my circuits that fried with this update... Who knows... what I do know is, more information needs to be investigated before I just hand them $130 or buy a new device, and never know if it was my device's problem, or Garmin's problem...

Any assistance would be indebted...

Voice commands

A couple of suggestions .Possible bad or missing file.Info from https://goo.gl/yMK4g8

Restore the speech recognition file:

Connect the device to the computer with a USB cable. Then run Garmin Express.
Follow the on-screen instructions to add your device (if prompted), or select your previously saved device.
Click Tools.
Expand Language Files under Optional Updates.
Select the desired language(s).
Click Install Now.

If installing this file does not resolve the problem, you may have loaded only a region of mapping to your device during a map update. Run the map update again and choose full coverage for your continent.

You can revert ...

Earlier updates are available here

http://www.gawisp.com/perry/nuvi/

Download the appropriate file, rename it gupdate.gcd and place it in the .system folder

Boot your nuvi and you'll be warned you're reverting to an older firmware version. Accept it.

Note reverting will delete all your favourites/saved places so back them up first.

However before you do all of that have you tried a master reset? That normally resolves issues after a software update.

Edit: Should have read your post more carefully, seems it's a map update and not a software update you had the issue with smile so charlesd45 probably has the answer.

@charlesd45

Thank you! Glad to be here!

I did try to reinstall the English language under Tools with the customer support rep, but the same issue happened...

I'm trying the map reinstall as you suggested, and I verified it said Full Region North America 2017.10, approx 3 hours...

So we'll see...

.system and other file folders

How do I access those hidden folders? is it just viewing hidden folders in windows? or is there some special way to see those folders, cause currently I can't see them...

Also, you may be right about the map update part, but I'm attempting to reinstall that now in case something went south the first time...

I'm assuming there's no way to go back to 2016.10/20/30 and either keep it there or test my theory that my device is actually working properly and there's a coding error...

Has anyone else with a 3590LMT had this issue specifically with voice command?

If needed...

If still no luck, don't ignore sussamb's suggestion of a hard reset:

I have a 3590..

...and have never had a problem like the one you have outlined. I would try the hard reset. I have had to do that a couple of times when it started acting hokey.
