Garmin 3490 Froze During Navigation

So I am currently travelling around the country on vacation and I have been using the Garmin 3490 extensively and it's been great but for the first time in four years it froze in the middle of navigation. It showed an exit to get off at and after I did, it stayed on that screen for at least a mile later. I tried voice command and touching the screen but nothing. I had to hold the power down and let it reset for it to come back. First time I have experienced that. Wondering if others have had the same issue with the 3490 or other unit for that matter.

Yep

Occasionally happens with mine, rare but it happens.

OK thanks. Found another anomaly. There was traffic ahead and it said re-routing to save 0 minutes. That was interesting!

Once In a While

I've owned many different Garmin GPSr's over the years and have experienced freeze-ups with several.

The problem does not appear to be model specific and is usually fixed by a reboot and / or hard reset.

Big model difference

Presumably because of differences in firmware bug levels, I've seen a really big difference in the rate of freezes among the three Garmin models which I have run for almost all the miles I have driven since 2001.

The first of these, a Garmin GPS V, never froze at all that I can recall. So it was a real shock, and a major dissatisfaction for me, that my next model, an 855, froze on average about once every ten operating hours (this was an improvement from an even worse level before a firmware update). My current 3790LMT has frozen, but far less often than the 855. I'd guess perhaps once every two hundred operating hours.

3590LMT Also

I've had mine lock up on occasion. Usually as I recall, while traversing between narrow valleys with high peaks nearby. I just chalk it up to loss of the satellites or something (could be a bug?). Turning the unit off and on again fixes it for me.

bugs and other problems

Glitches are becoming more common on newer devices for couple reasons.

Firstly there is more futures loaded into devices, that must be processed in real time. And more for device to do, there is bigger chance that something will go wrong.

Secondly, maps are getting way bigger than they use to be in the past. They contain more futures as well, so there is more data to process.

Thirdly - debugging for firmware and software seems to be one of those costs, that manufacturers are cutting off production line. We can see this with Garmin Express as excellent example.

I read couple of times about GPS freezing at some point, and - without user action - resuming guidance couple minutes/miles later.

So if it's just accidental occurrence, just learn to live with it. It's not worth to get worked up over something that isn't critical.

No freezing on any of my units

My 650 never froze except the screen is now non responsive. That is why I bought the 2460 last year.No freezing. Since I also have a company 1350 that has never been an issue. The 1350 and 2460 is used all day long on average of 3 to 4 hours a day.

3490 Froze

My 3490 seems to give me more problems than in the past.

Occasional Freezez, Overheat Warnings......

I don't know if it's just getting too old or what ?

Never Before

This was the first time I had any issues with it. Maybe after updating to the latest map? As for firmware updates, Garmin seems to have given up updating it for at least two years now.

As a company, they are horrible. I spent numerous hours researching issues and sent the lead development team a detailed email and got absolutely no response. I even met them in person prior to sending it and they still didn't have the courtesy to respond.

They just come out with a new product and hope all prior issues will just go away by having people buy new units I guess.

.

Was in California last week and used my 3590 and it froze on me a couple times. Did hard reset and haven't had the problem since. Not sure what caused it to freeze.

on

the 660 it happened a lot, then it just became toast. On the 2350LMT, it happened maybe 4X in 5yrs?

Funny how the 660 was "advanced" at one time, I paid like $280 for it new, and thought wow what a piece of junk it lasted 2 yrs? There was even repair services online, which only proves there was a demand for such services...

The 2350 has been slow to recalculate at times...

Happened to me in Northern California...

I also have the 3590 and it froze last week a couple times in Northern California up in the mountains. I'll be back out there in a few days so I'll see if it happens again in the mountains and valleys.
