refurbed 52lm Nuvi

In spite of my membership in this forum of nearly 8 years it has been a number of years since I owned or actively used a Garmin device. I recently purchased a refurbed 52lm from Amazon. I started by registering updating its maps and software. Then coming here and reviewing the tutorials.
I think I backed up the 52 onto my Win 7 pc. But I’m confused;
On the G drive on the PC where the Garmin sits while copying files I saw the following:
Garmin
GPX
Help
Keyboards
Text
Tutorials
Vehicle
Voice
autorun
D419212ver
Nuvi drive

After copying files to the PC I saw the following files in the folder created for the backup:
.system
Garmin
GPX
Help

Did I backup all of the files from the GPS? Also how would I reinstall the files to the GPS if necessary?
How do I go about updating maps without updating the software on the unit? Do I use Garmin Map Updater or Express?

Thank you for any help you can send my way.

It would

It would appear that possibly you haven't fully backed up the Nuvi as you should see (with one exception) a list of files and folders that is exactly the same when looking at the file structure of your Nuvi and the list of files and folders in your Backup folder on the PC. In your case you seem to be missing some folders and files on your computer.

The one exception is the .system folder which is appearing on your PC. This folder is normally hidden in the default Windows operating system's folder view settings so unless you have made changes to the default settings in Windows you wouldn't see this folder when looking at the Nuvi's file system. There are procedures for making this folder visible in Windows which you can find in the FAQ's published here.

To reinstall the files and folders you would use the "restore" facility found in your backup software or a simple copy back to the device if you used "copy and paste" to copy the files from the Nuvi to your computer.

For installing your maps Garmin Express or MapUpdater will both do the job. I use Garmin Express to install the maps and WebUpdater to install software updates.Garmin Express will also install software updates.See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihYp6OuVBLo . To do a complete backup for your GPS this video may help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv0w8lNNHYg
