MSI install error

When I run Base Camp I get a MSI install error which stops it. Anyone have this or a solution? MX Fixit didn't help.

Try this ..

although you say you've run it already. Did you follow the instructions completely?

Basecamp

As far as I can tell, yes I have. BaseCamp isn't on the list so what are you suggesting.

Are you saying to uninstall all the Garmin stuff?

Can you clarify?

Does the install error occur when installing or updating BaseCamp, or as you wrote, does it occur when using BaseCamp?

The Garmin 'MS fix FAQ' seems to be intended for Garmin Express. The various runs of the Fix may need to be run for BaseCamp rather than the five items in Step 4 intended for GE. The problem is finding which items to select for a run of Fix.

Before running the Fix and trying to determine what files to fix, have you tried uninstalling BaseCamp (maybe using Revo uninstaller rather than the MS uninstall), then reinstalling? If this happened to me, I'd try this first. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to uninstall, download again from Garmin and reinstall.

I did have a MSI error many months ago but mine was with Garmin Express so the MS Fix worked for me.

The near-final post in this thread may offer some help:

Good luck.

Nope

Just use it to uninstall Basecamp. For Express there are numerous files to be dealt with, hence why that is explained in a bit more detail.

If you've done that already then I'm not sure what else you could try. You could try checking the .NET installation

not installed

BaseCamp is not installed. Not in the Garmin folder. At least a dozen DL & installs at that site, I'll just skip BC. BC 425 would not install either.
Thanks for the help.

Same here...

Currently running 452, I tried to update Basecamp to 461 from within the program. I got an "MSI Error: InstallFailure" message. In the process, the action also closed the program.

I went to my icon to reopen and try again, and was told the file to which the shortcut referenced no longer existed. However, when I go to the "uninstall programs" option in Control Panel, Garmin Basecamp is still listed.

My next thought...uninstall, download the full, updated program from Garmin, then reinstall using the new version. Simple, right? One would think so, but noooo!

Downloaded fine...but when I tried to unintall the older version from Control Panel, nothing happens. I click the program name, select uninstall, am prompted "are you sure", click yes, then nothing. No action. No uninstall. No nothing! When I select uninstall again, I get the same prompt, and nothing else.

I also tried just running the newly downloaded .exe to install the new version, but am getting the same MSI error. I read on another site to ensure Windows Media 11 or higher is active from the control panel. I checked...the tick box is checked, so yes, it's active (actually version 12, not 11).

I've tried running the install file as administrator, not as administrator, and tried every compatibility setting listed, both as admin and not as admin.

I also tried reinstalling the two older versions that I still have in my "downloads" folder from prior updates (452 and 442). No luck...same error message in every case.

Don't quite know where to go from here.

I am running Windows 10. Windows updates are set to automatic, all are up to date.

Advice, please?

Found my solution

So sorry. Within an hour of posting this issue, I found my problem, and it was me. smile

I stated all Windows updates were, well, up-to-date. That was an assumption based on my settings, which are to automatically install updates.

What I didn't know was that I had an update installed that required a restart, and I hadn't restarted yet. I restarted. Afterwards, the older Basecamp uninstalled perfectly, and the newest version, downloaded from Garmin, installed perfectly.

I hope this helps someone else out there! Good luck! smile

Thanks for the help.

If installed normally on a Windows PC (all PCs post-XP, I think), BaseCamp will be in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\ and will be in a BaseCamp folder.

Rhodesmk also points out the importance of checking that Windows updates have all been downloaded, installed, and if needed, the PC rebooted.

restart the computer

This happens all the time! The trick is to remember to restart the computer before taking extreme measures!

Still needs something like S&T's Trip Planner

S&T's Trip Planner allows you to enter to stop something like Stop every 2 hours for 15 minutes. This gjves a great approximation of where you will end up each day.

in addition you can s hedule a stop for things like over night stays, etc.

This would be a huge plus for Bascamp.

The dobs factor

I have on several occasions forgot that important step, but not this time.
One fix had me deleting that Garmin folder in that location. No joy.
"NO updates available for your computer".
I'm still working on it but not to the point of uninstalling all the Garmin installs and reinstalling. I really don't think that would change anything in MSI.
If any other ideas come up please let me know. I'll certainly report back any good news.

You can if you use the trip planner app in BaseCamp

Not Impressed With Basecamp Trip Planner

You can if you use the trip planner app in BaseCamp

I've tried Trip Planner and not impressed. You can enter driving time per day, and the date that you leave. It does not allow you to enter preset stops as in S&T, but that is minor compared to it's other limitations.

When I do a long haul trip, I create a Custom POI, such s Myrtle Beach South and enter waypoints that will force my route, the way I want to go. I import that POI into My Collection and will have a subdirectory of MyCollection called Myrtle Beach South. All of my wayponts are easily accessible.

If I use trip planner, I can't just CTRL Click on each waypoint in order. I must type the name of the waypoint in my destination and the waypoint and many other locations, unrelated to my POI show up and I must click on the right one. Once done, each step takes a huge time period to calculate each segment of the trip.

I can do the same by CTRL Click on MBSouth waypoints, then right clicking and clicking on Create Route. That calculates my route, significantly faster. I can right click on each waypoint and enter start time, duration, or departure time.

Unfortunately, it does not allow driving time per day, but otherwise, much faster and easier than Trip Planner.

Agree with above post

Using create a route with way points is much easier than Trip Planner. I tried Trip Planner a few times and went back to create route. Much easier.

I agree ...

... and don't use trip planner myself either, but some folks like it as you can include layovers etc.

Trip Planner is a pain in

Trip Planner is a pain in the tucas. Point and click or drag and drop is much easier. When it works. You can go back and schedule your start and arrival times.

has a similar feature, since Garmin bought Delorme it will be interesting to see what they do with the Software they got in the deal, I suspect they bought Delorme just for the In-Reach phones

MSI Error: InstallFailure - AGAIN

I thought I had this fixed with the upgrade to 4.6.1 (see earlier post by me). However, I got this error again with 4.6.2, and my prior fix doesn't work.

Any thoughts, ideas, etc.???

Run the REVO Uninstaller and have it not only remove the program but clean the Registry of all fragments.
