Word of caution!

I don't know if this situation is unique to my 3597, but after letting Garmin Express do the updates listed above, I was looking around in the various folders to see what changes were made and noticed that 3 of the 4 .SID files that came with the 2016.20 CN NA map update were missing in folder \.system\SID. Fortunately, I have a good backup and was able to restore these 3 files.

Have others updating a 3597 had the same loss of files?

What's the effect of the missing files on the nuvi's operation?

I hesitate to update mine even with having a backup as alandb does.

Is Samantha a typo? Did you mean to write 2.20?

missing SID files

@CraigW

I didn't try to use my nuvi after the loss of the .SID files, so I can't say for sure which functions were affected. It was reported in another thread that the .SID files are used for external point addressing, instasearch, traffic trends and fast routing. So I can assume that I lost 3 of these features. I did not make note of which .SID file I still had, but going just from memory, I think I still had the external point addressing file.

Yes, the Samantha version was a typo ... it is 2.20 as you indicated.

I too would like to know if anyone else has this issue or if it was just some weird failure with my update. I did remember to do a "safely remove" operation to disconnect the nuvi from the computer after the update downloaded and before the reboot/install step. So I don't think that was the problem.

Thanks.

From another SID thread here at The Factory, it appears that the various SID files may sometimes change with a map or software update. That's why I worry about just using SID files from a backup and why I'll wait a week or two to see what follows. Hmm, I can't remember now if SID revisions came with map updates or device software updates...

If the SID file loss is a Garmin issue, they may very soon offer a new software update (or remove the current 5.20 offering).

If the SID file loss was just an odd glitch for your update, then hopefully others will report back in this thread that they updated their 3597 to 5.20 and kept all x number of SID files.

Thanks for telling us of the Samantha update. I've updated my faq. It may well be that this Samantha update is affecting her Real Voice or Real Directions instructions and if so, I may need to try using her in place of my Karen. The Samantha update states: Pronunciation improvements for major brands. Currently, this single voice is the only TTS3 voice updated from 2.10 to 2.20. If a Real Voice issue, a Serena update should follow. If a Real Directions issue, maybe the remaining six TTS3 English language voices will also update soon.

.SID files.

You are correct CraigW that the .SID files are tied to the map update. Fortunately, since I use cloning to do map updates, I automatically have a backup of all the new map files on the clone image. So I was able to restore the correct .SID files that came with the 2016.20 map.

I suspect if someone else has this problem and does not have a backup, they would be able to just reinstall their installed map version to get the .SID files back.

Well ....

since no one else has reported a problem with missing .SID files, I have to think it was something stupid I did and not related to the 5.20 software update. I wish I knew how I screwed up so I could avoid it in the future, but I don't have a clue. In any case ... sorry for the false alarm.

Thanks for the news. I can confirm that my 3597 updated to software 5.20 without the loss of any SID files today.

I did have a strange result, easily fixed: My 3597 after the update had the Screenshot option checked. I went back and unchecked it. Should you do the update and see a new camera icon in the upper right of your display, that's Screenshot. Go to Tools/Display to find the Screenshot checkbox if you want to enable or disable it.

Also odd, I wasn't offered the Samantha 2.20 update automatically but had to go in Garmin Express to the Tools, Optional Updates, Language Files, English to update my Samantha and Jack (and it didn't identify what voices were being updated). Is this normal? I don't remember having to do this in the past to get a voice update for an existing voice.

Lastly, in addition to the new Samantha that alandb already reported, there's now a new Jack as well. Both are now version 2.20 and offer the same "Pronunciation improvements for major brands" notice.

I'm giving the new Samantha control of my 3597 to see if I hear anything new. Given that both Samantha and Jack have updated from 2.1 to 2.2, we may soon see the other five TTS3 voices update to 2.20 as well. If so, it'll be reported in my English Language Voice thread and FAQ.

alandb and everyone else, How found?

alandb and others doing the update, was the new Samantha found automatically and offered with the 5.20 software, keyboard and text updates, or did you have to go to GE's Tools/OptionalUpdates/LanguageFiles to find the new Samantha?

I was not offered the new Samantha with the other updates and would not have been able to get it without going to GE's Tools/.../LanguageFiles/English and even then, I had to choose English with no knowledge of what voices were going to be offered. If you were offered the new Samantha automatically and by name, I wonder why I wasn't. And if you found the new Samantha the way I did, I'll have to change my language FAQ so I anxiously await your reply.

Yes.

Samantha, but not Jack was offered and updated automatically along with the 5.20 software. I still have the older version of Jack, and Garmin Express is not offering an update on the main device window. Of course, I could probably do as you did and go to the Tools menu and update all English voices.

I fired up the old WebUpdater, and sure enough, Jack is listed there as an update. So I will use WebUpdater to update Jack. I guess this shows that the good ol' WebUpdater program is still superior to Garmin Express, at least in this one function.

Thanks. Charlesd also had good luck with WebUpdater. I'll revise my faq accordingly.

One thing ....

One thing I should have tried before using WebUpdater was to make Jack my selected voice, then try Garmin Express again. Maybe Garmin Express only offers the automatic update on the active voice ... just a theory, but too late to try it now.

Updare

Using Web updater Samantha was my defult voice with Jack in the voice folder in case I wanted to use it. Still offered Samantha and Jack update.

What we apparently have discovered is that with TTS3 voices on Garmin devices, WebUpdater will offer and update all voices which was your result. Using Garmin Express to update the TTS3 voices already on a device, alandb was offered one voice along with all other updates while my results were to be offered no voice updates.

Always subject to change as we gather more information, Garmin Express won't reliably offer voice updates and WebUpdater will offer all voice updates. Yes, Garmin Express will do the updates in a roundabout way, but not nearly as well as WebUpdater. At least with the current version of Garmin Express (4.1.12.0), it is not a reliable source for voice updates for the newer devices using TTS3 voices and I consider this a serious flaw in Garmin Express.

Updates OK

Updates worked fine for me.

Let us know what you think about the new Sam.

Were the new Sam and Jack updates offered as part of the overall update files? Several folks including me did not get the voice updates offered and I had to update them separately.

Hmm, do our Neighbors to the North ever feel slighted that there are no Canadian English voices? May I suggest Sarah McLachlan. I think I remember seeing that among the French voices, there is a Canadian French voice.

Using WebUpdater in the past I would update the software and then it would show me all the other available optional updates which I could choose to download and all would be done in that one sequence.

This time around I used Garmin Express and it initially updated the software, keyboard & text file but didn't update the voice file. After having rebooted my 3597 thus installing the above files I replugged the GPS and Garmin Express still wouldn't offer me the voice update.

I then closed the Garmin Express program and reopened it and again plugged in the GPS and this time around it downloaded Samantha version 2.20. I don't use Jack therefore that download wasn't offered to me.

I then went into the keyboard and text folder and deleted the unnecessary languages that I don't use. I'll wait for the next map update and following that I'll do a hard reset just to make sure that everything runs properly.

Bottom line: Garmin Express worked and did the job but as far as I'm concerned not as smoothly as WebUpdater has done in the past.
