(SOLVED) POI Loader problems
13 years
|
Hi, I have used POI loader successfully for years.
This year I purchased a new computer with Windows 8. I haven't used POI Loader for around a year. I installed the version I used to use and have problems. Using the latest version has the same problems.
I have several folders, one folder for each POI category. For example, one folder for redlight cameras, another folder for speed cameras, etc.. Each folder contains 4 files:
1. BMP file
2. MP3 file
3. WAV file
4. CSV file
When I run POI Loader (with manual option, and write to a computer file), it complains about the WAV file. It says it was "unable to convert the WAV file to the proper format, therefore this audio file was not transferred."
So, if I eliminate the WAV file, it will finish without errors. I wonder if it is using the MP3 file, or if there will be no audio?
Sox?
Did you remember to install sox.exe in the folder containing the POI Loader program files on the new PC?
If a nuvi 750 is your only nuvi, you can use mp3 audio without extra effort. But wav files requires sox.exe for POI Loader to install the wav audio from PCs.
I even forgot what sox was
I even forgot what sox was for.
One last thought
I even forgot what sox was for.
If some of your POI files have a wav audio file and others have mp3, you should be OK. I'm not sure what will happen if you have both a wav and a mp3 intended for the same POI file.
sox.exe: be sure to use only the older version 14.0.1, not to be confused with a later 14.1.0:

Remove the wav file.It is not required for a Nuvi 750. You will get the nag screen if sox.exe is not installed along with a wav file when running poiloader. But as posted you don't need sox.exe or wav for Nuvi 750.

Using a mp3 and a wav sound files for the same location may cause problems.May lock up when trying to announce two different files. I know that when arriving at a location and getting the arrival alert and at the same time getting alert for another custom poi file in the area.Something has to give.Have had my old Nuvi 265 lock up for a short time before resuming navagation in this example.

Charles, I never had a problem with it on the Nuvi 750.
I include both in the hopes that it will work on a variety of devices. I have shared the custom poi file by putting a microSD card into a friend's Nuvi and powering it up.
Years ago I shared the file on the internet, and many expressed that it worked and thanked me.
I think the newest models have speed camera alerts from Garmin. My sister's Nuvi has it, but the alert sound is inadequate in my opinion.
Good idea
I was wondering if you had more then one GPS. Lots of members just use the wav and soxe.exe on units that use mp3's without the mp3. So they have to only have to keep up with one file that can be loaded to both the old and new gps's.So you could still elimate the mp3.

760 forgot how to use mp3
My 760 (same as the 750) always used mp3s for sound alerts in the past. After an update about two years ago, it stopped playing the alerts. I do not know if it was a nuvi software update or a POI Loader update that caused the problem. Nothing worked until I installed sox.exe and converted the mp3s to wav files. I have been using wav files ever since.

I have been using both wav and mp3 files in the same location for the last two years and have never had an issue with them competing with each other. It may happen, but I have never had an issue with it.
