Size and File Type

I am not up on Photoshop per se, but you can make/ save icons in MS Paint or any number of simple/ free programs so I am sure it can also be done in Photoshop. The key is to make sure it is of a size that is 24x24 pixels (or less) 256 color (or higher) and saved as a BMP file. The file name must be the same as the POI file name and also placed in the same directory as the POI file so that it can be loaded at the same time. Good luck.

Photoshop LE

Poke around the program to find a to find a menu item "image". then look for "image size" and set the size in pixels. Photoshop probably has these menu items ...just need to check the menu until you find the right one.

Paint does not re-size/scale the whole image, just cuts off the right side and bottom.

If you want to create your own by starting with a new blank file, which is what I guess you want to do since you say you need to put in height and width.

Start with entering even dimensions such as 200 x 200 pixels. This can go larger or smaller depending on what you are creating. Trial and error will let you know.

When you are ready to resize, go to Image, resize image then replace the 200 (H and W) with 24. Make sure you have pixels and not percent selected.
Also set resolution to about 72 and check the boxes for Constrain Proportions and Resample Image - Bicubic.

If you change image size from something you get from the web you may have to experiment a bit with cropping and resizing to get the size you want. My 550 doesn't need to have H and W exactly the same. I can use 24 x 18 for example just fine. Just make sure to "save-as" in bmp format.

This is basically how I do mine. You can check out some of my creations at POI icons

www.shrinkpictures.com

I just found www.shrinkpictures.com today. The pic I converted was about 40 x 40 pixels...this site reduced it to 24 x 16 with no real loss in quality. (I can't see much at either resolution anyhow!) Just set the max. resolution to 24.

It doesn't accept bitmaps, so save your orignal pic as a .gif and then convert to .bmp in Paint or your favorite graphics program.

MS Office Picture Manager

For those of you that want to use a jpg file and have MS Office Picture Manager... it will produce the same results as shrinkpictures very quickly.

Open a COPY of your picture, crop it to be square (any size), then "export" it. As you do... choose the bmp file format and resize it to 24x24. When it's exported... you're done.

.

I've also used a program called cam2pc for resizing. Although I mostly use Photoshop Elements and MS Paint for working with icon files.
