storing routes

Does anyone know of a Garmin device that will store a list of waypoints in the form of a route?
I currently use a nuvi 2200, which has a trip planner, but it treats the POIs I enter as individual journeys rather than waypoints.

Routes on nuvis

This FAQ from Garmin covers units that will do what you want

You unfortunately have one of the few units that will not accept routes.

The Montana and GPSMAP 64 series do routing.

Information Which May Help

According to pages 22 and 23 of your user manual:

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/nuvi_2200_2300_2400_EN_OM.pdf

You should be able to use trip planner to build, modify and save a trip. Your Nuvi 2200 will save up to 100 trips with a maximum of 30 waypoints in each:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={affd6860-aeb4-11de-6d61-000000000000}

and:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={a208c0b0-6cb1-11e2-65d0-000000000000}

I’m not sure what you want to do with these saved trips. AFAIK, there is no way to export them from your 2200 for use in other devices or computer software such as Basecamp.

As sussamb previously posted, the following Garmin FAQ lists those GPSr’s which support the route import feature from programs such as Basecamp:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={65814150-50b3-11dc-4ec8-000000000000}

I hope this helps.

Handhelds

As do most handhelds but from the Ops post he's after a device for use in a vehicle.

Good point, I had perhaps misread the OPs post and though he was trying to send routes to his nuvi.

If he is, as you surmise, talking about creating routes on his nuvi then trip planner (which he also mentions) will allow this.

This perhaps then throws more light on his statement, as the 2200 uses the older style trip planner. This only shows you the section of the route to the next viapoint/POI/saved place (whatever you prefer to call it), and only switches to the next section when you reach the end of the section you're on.

Thankfully Garmin changed this behaviour and newer style trip planners introduced (I think) from 2013 onwards show the whole route and work more like the older style 'route planner'.

They Work In A Vehicle

I use the Montana and GPSMAP 64S in a vehicle. There are great mounting options for the Montana and 64S.

And routing may be called Trip Planner, or Route Planner, does the same thing, puts a bunch of waypoints together in order to be used as a total or overall route.

Agreed

Yes, I understand that, and my choice of words wasn't the best, but there are limitations when using handhelds in a vehicle (I use my Montana and Etrex 20 occasionally) but again given the OP has a nuvi believe he's after another one rather than a handheld. No doubt he'll let us know smile
