What New Garmin Units Or Features Would You Like To See In The Future?

I was thinking a bit ago that I would like to see the following:

-A US/North American version of the Garmin Nuvi 4592R Plus

-A newer Garmin Monterra with a better screen

-Garmin RINOs that are a bit smaller

-A Garmin Epix that is thinner and more feature rich

What would you folks like to see in the future?

external antenna

I have an RV with an over head cab. Blocks the signals alot. So I have to use a Repeater system. That works but it would be great to have the external jack back on them.

I still like MS and us it alot as BC doesn't do as good a job in areas MS does.

Maybe a USB-C port?

Since it seems many computing devices are going to a USB-C standard, it would be nice if GPS units did as well.

Bring back DEM

I do not see any of the new units that support/include the "3D terrain"/DEM file. I love this feature especially when driving in the Smoky Mountains in NC and WV.

Agree

It's the one thing I do miss on the DriveLuxe 50.

A USB 3.x port would speed

A USB 3.x port would speed up the transfers from the computer to the Garmin significantly but the major improvement will always be the speed at which the files are downloaded from the Internet over which any improvement in Garmin device hardware would have no effect.

--
Illiterate? Write for free help.

USB 3.0 is faster but..

The bottleneck is still the way that the GPS absorbs and processes the data. The "Google" tells me...

The now-aging USB 2.0 standard can theoretically transfer data at a very high 480 megabits per second (mbps), or 60 megabytes per second (MBps). That's impressive, but not as much as the newer USB 3.0, which can handle up to 5gbps (640MBps)—over ten times as fast as the 2.0 maximum.

My math may be wrong, but.. assuming a 6 GB map update this should take via a USB 2.0 10 seconds and with USB 3.0 1 second.

GPS with Traffic

No other features, just more stuff to up Price, battery use and repair bills!!

Nice idea

I like that. I still use my old 760 because it has an audio out jack and both an mp3 player and a .aud player as well. Give me those old features (along with your audio in jack) and I would buy a new unit today.

How about a feature request for this forum?

Why does "this" thread start at the beginning.. and you need to scroll to the bottom.. go to page 2.. then scroll to the bottom to find the latest comment? There are several long threads that do this.. but some.. don't. grin

When I mark all treads as read.. then the next day find several with new comments.. is it not normal to expect to go to "those" comments and not have to start at #1... evil

Is this a random thing.. is there a setting when one starts a thread to make it "normal".. I love the forum and have found (and received) tons of useful advice / help but.. a minor pet peeve..

I'm sure you're already doing this, but to be sure, make sure you're logged in to the site. (You can stay logged in by not logging out and probably 95% of the time when you return another day, you'll still be logged in.)

Your "marking all threads as read" is great. Keep doing this.

Now when you return next after a "mark all as read," how do you do it? Do you click "recent posts" or "unread posts?" I'm guessing you click "recent" since I do not have your problem when I click "unread." My suggestion therefore is to continue to mark all threads as read at the end of every session on the site, then when you return, be logged in and click "unread posts."

Note: "unread posts" is only available when you're logged in. If not, you're only offered "recent posts."

Let us know if this works.

Green hearts

That doesn't work. I've turned off so many settings to try to make those green hearts go away, but so far no luck.

Thanks anyways

Multiple page threads

I find clicking on New Posts only works if it's a one page thread. As soon as it goes to multiple pages it always goes to post #1.

As you can see I've been a member here for 10+ years. When ever you do anything on the 2 + page of a thread the forum software takes you back to the first page of that thread. Over the years I've questioned and complained about this, to no avail. I don't recall ever even receiving any explanation for why the software is setup to do this. I belong to many different forums and have never seen one that works like this.

I wouldn't hold my breath to see a change.

t923347, I don't agree. If I understand your post, you're saying that if a post has multiple pages and a new item is posted, then the next time you go into "unread posts" you're directed to the first item on page 1.
I've been on this site for almost as long as you, and I can attest that the user is directed to the last page at the first new, unread item. What you described is the action taken if you go in through "recent posts."

I agree. There is one other way that you will always start at the top of Page 1 and therefore it's not the way to go to find new posts to the thread. If you click the actual thread name under "Active Forum Topics" you will start at the top of page 1.

As we've found, clicking "mark all as read" before leaving the site each visit followed by clicking "unread posts" when you return is what I find the best and fastest way to read new posts without needless scrolling. There's one other thing that I do if I see multiple threads with unread posts. Rather than just clicking one of the threads with unread posts, I right-click, then "open link in new window." This lets me read the unread posts in a thread in a second window, then when done close that window, and be returned to my list of threads with unread posts in the first window.

One last tip to minimize irrelevant posts. When in the "Unread Forum Posts" page, look for "Forum Preferences (Favorite / Hide)." By clicking it, you can hide forums in which you have no interest; e.g., Mac Topics for PC users; Magellan, Rand McNally and Tom Tom forums for Garmin users, etc.

Thanks Rick

Replaceable Battery

It would be nice to replace the battery once it starts to degrade. Not a sexy feeature, but would be nice.

More / better map updates

As we are requesting new features.. How about tying into the Google Maps system. Google Maps seem to be far more current, searchable and create routes easier and better on my tablet than what Garmin offers me.

Seems it would not be a huge programming problem to be able to download local areas.. much like one can load areas to work off line in Google Maps. Garmin could licence different areas to download and give consumers the choice to download a specific area with a lot more detail than space currently restricts by including all of North America, for example.

Just a thought

More detailed maps PLEASE!!!

Hmmm ...

... in what way? I often find them too cluttered!!

What would be really useful if is directions matched road signs, so if they have a road number Garmin shouldn't announce a road name, or if it does announce the number as well.

Garmin needs to keep up with the best technology available. If Google has a better system than "here" should they not consider making a change. Consumers will gravitate to the best available.. leaving those companies that do not keep up.

Predictive typing?

Not sure that is the right term.. but when adding an address you have a choice of selecting content from the top bar. It would be nice it Garmin remembered previously typed in addresses and include those as a first choice.

New feature

I would like it if the gps would retain the city you're currently in, insTead of having to enter it each time you enter a new address.

True

But.. it means scrolling down.. and down.. As a volunteer driver for seniors I have literary 1000's of addresses I have been to. I may or may not have been to "that" address previously. If Garmin recognized it as a previously entered address.. showing it in the header as a possibility would be.. doing what computers are capable of doing.

And....a fully customizable screen menu

Predictive typing

Perhaps I have misled my problem. When typing in an address the first screen is numbers only. The second screen includes numbers and text. As one types text.. there are options to select from in the top bar. So.. if I start typing Saskatchewan Drive..for example.. it shows in the bar and selecting it saves me typing it.

So.. I would like this ability to also include ANY addresses I have typed in, in the past.. at the front of the list. If for example I wanted to go to 3616 28A Ave NW by the time I typed in 3616 2 all the places I have gone to that have 3616 2 would show..

Garmin.. sort of has this ability already with named streets.. but their priority (in the list) is based on the map.. and does consider having been accessed before.

--
Lives in Edmonton AB A volunteer driver for Drive Happiness.ca and now (since June 20 2021) uses a DS65 to find his clients.

OK

I sort of follow now ... but really if it's somewhere you go to often it should be in favourites, if something recent it should be in history towards the top. If it's a place you visited way back and you didn't save then surely that's something that folks would only use very infrequently?

Account for traffic lights when calculating ETA

Add, say, 30 seconds, for each traffic light you will encounter. I find lights to be the biggest factor in extending the ETA.

Exit #'s!!

I would like to see Exit #'s displayed similar to a standard map. Mine shows it on the direction prompts if exiting, but not on the map itself for all exits.

traffic light time

MikeSid wrote:

My Garmin 2557 does add for "something", because I can handily beat my original ETA on most trips even driving zero-over the speed limit. To the tune of 5 or 6 minutes on an hour trip, I would guess. I'm sure some of it can be attributed to missing/assumed/estimated or incorrect Speed Limit data used in their calculations of the trip segments. But, the original ETA is consistently generous (I get there sooner). So its not mere error.

Garmin units do "learn"

When determining ETAs, there's a difference between a new out-of-the-box (or master reset performed) automotive GPS and one that you've been using for a while:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42523

so red light delays for a given road type are learned by a nuvi and go into the initial ETA calculation the device makes.

Programming

I'd like to see scripting and programming added.

School Zone alerts

I have been waiting for school zone alerts.. But now that there are "some" in Edmonton Ab .. be careful of what you wish for..

So.. One thing to fix.. Turn off the alarm if the speed is zero. And.. perhaps base the warning on the speed of travel. Being warned 500 meters early is fine when you are doing 60 mph but not when you are going 25.. in the city and the school is 2 blocks up the street.

Better batteries. The newer

Better batteries. The newer models are not able to take you out on a hike as their battery only lasts an hour or less. My old 760 could be used in a park trail. Or at least get you around a city on foot. The 2699 and Drive Assist 51 with camera need to be plugged in all of the time.

Also all Garmins should have high clearance info and truck route as a choice.

I also want to be able to delete a point when I change my mind without starting over again.

better

I wish they had a better mount for autos, ive gone thru bean bags suction mounts they seem to last until the ball mount gets loose or the suction cup don't hold any more

Adding Category for new Favorite is cumbersome

I don't know of a better forum topic to post this under, but when I Save a location on my Garmin 2557LMT it is extremely cumbersome to add a Category or Edit the name. You have to Exit out of the Save, then search or browse to it in Saved locations. Only then you have the option to add a Category and other details. MAJOR hassle to me, which I've found no work around for. I always add a category which helps with future reference (job related).

In future products or software versions, you would ideally be able to add all this information when you initially Save a location.

Custom Avoidances

I frequently add Custom Avoidances (usually a section of road, rather than an area).

But I have no way of knowing/remembering which ones I have done and which ones I haven't yet. It would be really useful and logical if these sections of road were highlighted on my map at all times.
