Garmin doesn't turn off with car off

Had a 2595 I believe it was LMT that I passed to my brother. His daughter has been using it and recently I was told it doesn't turn off when she turns off the car. It used to but now it seems it just stays on until the battery drains down.

I took a quick look and the only thing I noticed was a 'car' icon on the upper left. Haven't had the time to investigate further. I just don't recall if the 'car' icon was always there when I had the unit in the past. About the only thing I found was to do a reboot of the unit. Went through the settings to see if there was anything I need to set or deselect but didn't find anything.

Anything else I should look at when I visit them again?

My thoughts

Which "battery drains down" are you referring to: the internal nuvi battery or the vehicle battery? If the cigarette lighter socket is always powered (as seen on some vehicles) and you are referring to the vehicle battery, the nuvi will not turn off and the vehicle battery, and later, the nuvi battery, will eventually drain down to nothing if the nuvi is not manually turned off or disconnected. This may explain the results seen if past vehicles used with the 2595 shut off the cigarette lighter socket but the current vehicle does not. If the cigarette lighter socket powers off with a vehicle shutdown (as seen on many other vehicles), then the nuvi may offer an auto shut off which may not be working.

Not having a 2595 but knowing that my other nuvis, upon losing external vehicle power, offer an auto-shutdown unless I tell it to stay on, makes me think that a hard reset of the nuvi in vehicles that shut off power to the cigarette lighter socket might help if the 2595 is supposed to offer the auto-shutdown. A quick test: if vehicles that offered an autoshutdown are still around, test the nuvi and see if the nuvi offers a shutdown. Then test the nuvi in the vehicle not offering an autoshutdown—if power to the cigarette lighter socket remains hot after turning off the engine, then a manual nuvi shutdown or disconnect will not be offered and the solution is that the nuvi will have to be manually turned off or disconnected to avoid loss of battery power.

The 2595 manual doesn't offer any advice on offering auto-shutdown.

One last thought: Could it be that the cigarette lighter socket or nuvi power cord has a blown fuse and the 2595 is always operating on internal battery power? That may explain the loss of an auto-shutdown offer when used the vehicle assuming the battery being drained is the nuvi battery, not the vehicle battery. If so, check the fuse and power to the cigarette lighter socket and of the Garmin power cable.

Power off

You may want to look at this http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/26864/2595-will-not-t... . Scroll down and you will see post from one user with info from Garmin.

Good find.

Good find Charlie. I wonder what other nuvi models might have that magnetic sensor in the cradle.

Not sure, that was a new one on me.

12V power plug-ins

A lot of vehicles have more than 1 12V power plug-in. The last 3-4 vehicles I've had, one powered down when the ignition is turned off, the other one didn't.

Check out the owner's manual.

Ed - Garmin Zumo 550 (have 2)

.

In my car, I installed an additional 12V outlet so I could place the GPS unit on the left side of the windshield and not have to pass the power cord to the other side of the vehicle.

I installed it on a circuit that turns off with the vehicle so I wouldn't have to worry about it staying on and draining the vehicle battery.

Heres how mine behaves with nonswitched power

If you have one of these;

Garmin ecoRoute - HD - Car diagnostic system adapter for GPS receiver - for nüLink!

Hooked up to the OBD-II port in your car AND it properly connects to your Nuvi, when you turn off your car the Nuvi will perform a 15 second count down when you turn off the car engine even if the power source isn't switched.

Of course, when you start your car, you need to manually restart the GPS even if it's just in standby mode.

Who would be looking for a magnet? The twists and turns that you have to go through to solve a problem.

Same garmin in two different

Same garmin in two different cars works differently in cigarette lighter, depending if lighter is powered when key is out of ignition or not...
Lighter jack in my 2011 Ford Escape does stay powered up.
Wife's Nissan Maxima (99?) and my old Saturn didn't.

Don't understand USA made vehicles, they have remote start, 12V sockets that don't turn off when car is off, and gas doors that don't lock. Total opposite of German and Japanese.

Once we were in the Dallas Galleria and they had this 93k Caddy on display, locked of course. I told my coworker watch, I bet the fuel door does not lock, and I popped it open and poured my bottled water into the tank so they would get a surprise when they go to move it....

I'm not

I'm not sure why you'd do something so silly as put water into a fuel tank of a vehicle but enough said. rolleyes

I also don't know what German or Japanese cars you've owned but I've owned vehicles from both countries and don't remember either one of them having a lockable gas door and they both had powered adapters that stayed on as well as some that didn't if the key was out

I agree with canuk's comment.
Why on earth would you want to punish the owner of the car that you perceive to be a design flaw. Just opening the door would have proved your point. Maybe someday someone will return the favor and do it to you and see how you like it.

Honestly... Do we really need to go exploring down that rabbit hole to begin to get a glimmer WHY this was first done and second shared.

Repeat afte me,
