765T Issues

Anyone else with a 765T past or current have issues with the unit staying powered on? Mine will power up, get through the load screen just fine then gets to the main "where to" screen then passes out, goes dark. It powers itself off and won't stay on for more than 15 seconds. I have tried to contact Garmin about it but they aren't much help. I used Garmin express to get updates and they still don't fix it. I've also did a Hard reset to no avail. Anyone else been through this and survived?? Thanks
Batteries Plus will do it for $15 + cost of battery
765 is a old model, probably weak battery
Thanks
Great thanks for the info. My concern is it shuts down even while plugged in. I will check into Batteries+ though!
Agreed

Yup, that'd be my first guess, too.

Another thought: Does the nuvi 765T start up and work when connected via the cigarette lighter power cord and nuvi cradle? If not, there could be a fuse blown in the vehicle or power cord. Worse, the cable could be bad or charging contacts dirty, or worst-case, the socket on the nuvi or cradle is defective. If any of these are true, the battery, good or bad, won't charge. As said earlier, a near-dead battery will exhibit the symptoms you see.
Oops

Oops, your reply came as I was still typing my first reply.
It still could be a near-dead battery, but this comment strengthens the possibility of a non-charging situation from a bad cable, blown fuse, bad contacts, or bad socket. Before going for a new battery, these other possibilities should be ruled out or fixed.
765T
I also have the 765T. A very good unit. I have not used it in about a month and not checked for updates for longer than that but I have no issues like that with it. The only thing related to a power issue is my on/off slide switch does not work each time I operate it. Also, mine will not work but a few minutes on battery power so my batteries are getting worn out too but remembering back, they did not power it long when it was new. I like it so much, I will continue using it until it is totally worn out.
I have a question related to the previous posts. Will the 765T not work if the battery is shot even if it is plugged to the car power?

My experience with an 885 (same vintage, different platform) is they do operate just fine with the battery nonfunctional (or mostly so). You need to have the unit plugged into the power source for 10 to 15 seconds before turning on though. It "charges" the internal circuitry enough that the battery detection circuitry will override the dead battery.

I'm Curious

I'm wondering if this also applies when plugging into a PC.
When there is insufficient battery power the unit may not have enough power to boot, it just attempts the boot then the screen goes black. By plugging into the PC with the USB cable I'm wondering if the .5 amp PC power has enough strength to override the battery circuitry. I imagine it would but I can't test since the batteries in both my units are good.

I will add that when my 765T's battery went bad it too would power on for a moment and then die. I have never had an issue with power cables and also purchased an extra on eBay with lifetime traffic some time ago. I plan to keep using the "old" 765T until it is no longer supported.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
I'd try placing the battery..
if you still intend to keep using they 765T. I replaced mine a few months back and it is easy. I would order one in a kit that includes the plastic pry bar and screw driver to open the case if you don't have such a tool(s) already.
I like my unit but the power/traffic cable sort of fell apart so it won't stay attached so I use without traffic and it has lost volume on all voices. I tried running the voices through the TTS editor but not much difference. All in all still a good unit
It's the speaker

Jim at Sharcnet reports the speakers get packed with dust and crud held in place by metallic filings the unit picks up through the grill. You may be able to clean it out and restore the speaker or it may just be a case where a new one is required.
