Garmin Express won't 'see' map update 2015.40

Did you hit the big + link and add the new 3597?

Is the 3597 registered with Garmin?

What version of Garmin Express are you using?

If you can't get Garmin Express to see that you're due a map update to 2015.40, what happens if, with the 3597 connected to the computer, you sign into myGarmin? Does Dashboard show a map update for the 3597?

I added it to GE & registered the unit the day I received it. I have the newest version of the GE software. It shows up under my account but tries to direct me to purchase the newest maps. Garmin express also shows a banner that 'new maps are available for purchase'

Did you buy your 3597 as a factory refurb? There were some reports of some European units being sold as North America refurbs. You should call (don't email) Garmin Product support to get this straightened out.

on the recommendation of this forum I purchased it as a factory refurb from thegpsstore.com

and I already started an email conversation with them but am getting canned responses (is GE Updated? etc etc)

You may want to read through the entire thread.

You will get much better information from more knowledgable support representatives if you call them. They can get remote access to your device through your computer and can resolve most problems.

followed the link on that thread and manually entered my serial number. Now I get 'details' links next to the map info for this device on my account on mygarmin.com that now shows lifetime maps among other stuff:

I've removed the GPS from GE (again) and let it re-detect it (again), but still no dice. ALTHOUGH map-updater now sees 2015.40:

so now what? let map updater do the update instead of GE? Will this thing ever be 'normal' ? Did I get free lifetime maps to Europe? Is this a good enough excuse to travel to Europe? lol

EDIT: (While map updater was still open), I decided to open GE one last time for giggles....and what do you know - now it'showing the update! So am I good now? And the above questions still remain...

For the nuvi 3597, Garmin Express is best unless you want to tinker with the lost or phantom DEM map:

But then, you can recover from a MapUpdater update so long as you look at your nuvi's files and have a full nuvi backup on your computer in case you need to copy the DEM map back to the GPS:

Especially on the backup. I normally back mine up as soon as I pull them from the box but this one wouldn't let me by my normal methods and I never got around to researching why. thank you

That's a great faq. jgermann should be adding it to his Index (and maybe Glossary) soon. Even though I've bought at least one Factory refurb and at least one used device, I've been lucky and Garmin offered my map updates without jumping through these added hurdles.

Now we (make that "I" ) just need to remember that this faq exists the next time a newby arrives at The Factory with this issue...

I'm sure you remember the he** I went through with not 1 BUT 2 2460 units from 2 different vendors. LOL
