Help with "Alerts" on 255w - experienced user NOW having trouble

255W with SD card. MacBook Pro. Software 7.60. North America 2015.40, Storage 12% full (1.6 GB free)

I install basically the same POIs ANNUALLY before each summer trip (Walmart, Coatco, Rest areas, campgrounds, National Parks). thank you for all your hard work to share these. I have tried both cvs and gpx

I always remove old POIs before I install the new files. Use the same folder on my Mac, Have the Updated POI Loader. Always do "manual Install and use feet and mph as my settings. Set Proximity alerts at 5000 feet. (use no speed alerts). In 2014, I realized we were not hearing any alerts for Walmart and Rest Areas (the only 2 were want to DING)

This year I have done the same procedure and again NO ALERTS when we test it, What has changed -- was it adding the SD card so we could install the whole of North America. I have queried Garmin and they send me down the procedures checklist that I use..

thank you for any insight. It is a mystery to me

Partial Answer

The reason why you are not hearing alerts on Walmart is straightforward. To get an alert "along the route", the coordinates of the Walmart would have to be within 30 meters (or about 98 feet) of the center of the road on which you are traveling. Thus, for a Walmart to "alert" you, the coordinates of that particular road would have to be set at an "parking lot entrance" within 30 meters of the road.

Now bear in mind that when you are on vacation, the roads on which you travel are not likely to be a road from which you can turn into a Walmart. Yes, you may be able to see the Walmart from a highway but it will not often be within 30 meters.

For an explanation of different alerts, see
Comparing Alerts - Speed, Along The Road, And TourGuide

If what you are wanted to have is an "alert" whenever you get within 5000 feet of a Walmart, you want to have a TourGuide file. See
TourGuide Radius Alerts

Now, why the Rest Areas are not "alerting" when you get to a point on the highway 5000 feet before reaching a rest area is a mystery to me. MrKenFL goes to great pains to make sure that the coordinates of each rest area are within 30 meters of the road on which the rest area is located. Indeed, some divided highways with small medians may alert from both sides of an Interstate because the ramp at which the coordinates are set is also within 30 meters of the OTHER side of the highway. Note to all readers: when you find this situation, report it to MrKenFL.

So, my question to you on Rest Areas is how did you test them? Your procedure for loading them should have worked.

Other things

Some other things to check would be if you have the WAV sound files and not MP3. I would also to check the Nuvi is configured to alert for custom POI, but because you are getting the default "Dings" it appears they may be enabled.

As you are on a MAC, I don't believe you need SOX as the MAC version of POI Loader associates the sound file with the POI without the need for the converter. You may want to check the file names though. They do have to match as far as the characters are concerned, I don't believe case matters though.

MANY thanks - I never utilized these tutorials before; details which are EXACTLY what I need to understand and will no doubt solve my walmart dilemna. I will have an opportunity to test the restareas alerts as we travel next week.

If you want to test your POIs before next week's travel, remember that you can simulate a route:
