The new equivalent of the old Garmin 2597

So I bought a 2597 LMT from best buy a few years ago and also bought the extended warranty knowing that if my previous GPS units were any indication, the battery on this unit would not last 3 years. With the old units, this was not a problem since I could just pop in a new $10 battery, but with the new ones, without a replaceable battery, it was going to pose a problem.

So my battery is no longer able to hold a charge past 30 minutes (sometimes not even 15 minutes) and while not a huge problem right now since I leave it plugged in all the time, it might be later this year when I travel and need it to run on battery power.

So I'm wondering is someone can point me in the right direction on where I can find the outline of new features of whatever unit is comparable to my 2597.

BestBuy's options in fulfilling the extended warranty are:
1) Replace it with a new unit of the same model
2) Replace it with a new unit of a like model
3) Give me a gift card of the original amount I paid for

I'm trying to determine if I would like to trade it out now (most likely for the same 2597--I can't imagine they would give me a gift card for $200 when it's now selling for $150) or wait for the 2597 to be discontinued and then get the newer model (either they'd give me the new one and we'd be all square, or they'd give me $200 toward the new one).

I'm guessing the 2559 or 2589 would be the comparable models but the two models seems very similar and I can't tell what akes one $20 more expensive than the other.

Thanks for any opinions you guys can offer!

have you

Have you gone to Garmin's site and compared models?

The Garmin site offers

The Garmin site offers feature by feature comparison that compares different models. The nice part about this is you delete rows with feature that are either the same or of no interest. Very nice site. Good luck!

2599

I'd ask for the 2599 to get HD traffic, but settle for 2589, which is what I think they will offer you.

Yes, I have tried the

Yes, I have tried the comparison feature on the Garmin website but it is very superficial. I was hoping that some people here would have upgraded from a 2597 model to one of the 2014 models and could offer more than just a superficial glance at them. IIRC, the only difference I found was that one had a Europe map which obviously can't be the reason for a whole new line of units!

yes, it can be

There are enough differences between European models and North American models to warrant a different model line. It's not just the maps which is the most evident difference, but there are differences in the internal settings as well. While the maps can be interchanged with little issue, the accessories on the higher end models are different. There are also different laws regarding what a unit can display, the French traffic camera law being perhaps the most well known. It makes sense from the manufacturer's standpoint to plainly differentiate between the two which is why there probably is an entirely different model line for what is basically the same hardware.

If you still like your 2597,

If you still like your 2597, there's a battery replacement & procedure. The battery is ~$30 and with a little patience you can do it yourself. I've replaced one in a LM40 and it was quite easy and the 2597 appears even easier. Even if you do buy another unit, you'll probably want to replace the one in the old unit as a backup. Just thinking out loud.

A good idea, but that's why

A good idea, but that's why I bought the warranty! I figured I could probably take it to the mall or somewhere and get it done for $40 which is just a hair over what the 3 year warranty cost me. It was really just me hedging my bets since now I'm covered for anything else that migh go wrong in addition to the battery that I knew would most likely go bad in 3 years (I used to replace my old 855 unit's battery every year.)

And I'm guessing that BestBuy will take the old unit back when the hand me whatever new one (or the gift card) they are going to hand me.
