CNNT 2015.4 Download Fails to Unlock in Basecamp

I downloaded CNNT 2015.4 using G.E. V4.0.17.0 with the “Install to device and Computer” option checked to my Win7-64 desktop. The download completed successfully but the 2015.4 map shows as locked in both Basecamp and Mapsource.

This has happened several times on multiple computers in the past with earlier map updates. Each time required a call to Garmin support with the usual lengthy wait on hold. In each case, I had to allow the Garmin tech direct access to the computer. I could not follow the procedure he used to fix the issue nor would he tell me how to do it myself. I understand as this procedure could be used to unlock illegally copied map products.

This issue has been mentioned here in the past with no solution offered that I can find. Has anyone else experienced this recently and found a fix without going through Garmin support?

I've never encountered that particular problem

But I found the following articles at Garmin.com (support search FAQ) and entered "unlock map basecamp" & another with "unlock map mapsource".

Hoping this will help smile

Thanks for the Information.

Thanks for the links canuk. I'm familiar with them. They are designed for GPS devices and DVD mapping products that come with a product code or ID number. This information is provided automatically when a GPSr with lifetime map updates is connected via Garmin Express or Mapupdater.

Occasionally, for some unknown reason, an update won't unlock on the computer but it does update the GPSr correctly. It's happened to me several times in the past on more than one computer. The problem usually occurs when I update several GPSr's in a row. I suspect another call to Garmin will be necessary.

What I've Seen Previously And Have Verified Still Works

The first time I discovered locked maps, I was using a non-Administrator LoginID on the PC to run MapSource (and have observed the same happens now if using BaseCamp).

Back then, I did enough checking to determine that the map updates needed to be performed as Administrator or equivalent, and while using that ID, MapSource had no locked maps. To use MapSource under a regular non-Admin login, I could unlock the map(s) by logging in to my MyGarmin account, locate the relevant "Installed Maps" (showing Product and Unlock Codes), and follow the prompts in MapSource to complete the process of unlocking the map.

I have now repeated this process successfully with BaseCamp on my newer Win7 64bit PC, and with the GPS attached and relevant info entered into the boxes, upon hitting the "Retrieve Unlocks" button at the bottom of the page launched by BaseCamp it successfully unlocked the maps for use with a non-Admin ID.

connect the gps

This is just a guess on my part. Whenever you have this trouble in BaseCamp or dealing with the Garmin site on unlocking maps, have the nuvi plugged in. This proves you own the maps.

Most of us never have this problem. I have 2 nuvis and am running Windows 7 x64. Whenever I view the map in BaseCamp, the nuvi is connected because I want to see the Custom POIs. I am always the administrator.

My guess is that if you plug the nuvi in you will be able to view the map in BaseCamp. Next time you may view the map without the nuvi.

MapSource

So far two posters have had this problem and both have MapSource installed. Maybe that is the common denominator. My PC has never had MapSource on it.

Worth Trying Again

I’ve used this process successfully in the past to unlock maps to both the device and computer. Taking your advice, I tried it again with no luck. I only use the Admin ID on my computers since that can indeed be an issue.

I retrieved the unlock code from MyGarmin and entered it into Basecamp but the 2015.4 map remains locked. The problem must be software related on my computer since MyGarmin indicates the download was already unlocked to both device and computer. This process should occur automatically in GE or Mapinstall when map updates are downloaded to any LM device with the “Install to Device and Computer” option selected.

I remember seeing a post here several years ago, that I now can’t locate, about someone with the same problem. As I recall, there was no solution.

In any case, thanks Bayou Navigator for your help.

question

Are you sure that the 2015.4 map has successfully installed and is checked as the map in use in all the nuvis?

No Problem on the Nuvi's

CNNT 2015.4 installed and works fine on all 5 of my Nuvi's. The problem is with Basecamp and Mapsource where CNNT 2015.4 shows as locked. This issue occurred on just one of my computers. There was no problem with the download on my laptop and second desktop. All three computers run Win 7-64 and have both Basecamp and Mapsource installed.

I usually use Basecamp and Mapsource without a GPSR connected until I'm ready to do a file transfer. Thats why I always install map updates to both device and computer.

Guessing

Call it guessing or brainstorming...
Why is the problem on only one computer? If you are running the Chrome browser, recently Chrome no longer supports the Garmin Communicator plugin. On the affected computer, connect a nuvi and run Internet Explorer - not Chrome - and go to this link -

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

This page will check whether you have Garmin Communicator, and install it if needed. It also checks for Garmin USB software. If Communicator is installed then, open BaseCamp - not MapSource - to try and view the map or try again to unlock it.

For The Record

My current PC has never had MapSource on it. The OP's problem, especially since he's operating as Admin or equivalent, sounds to this long time IT Systems Engineer like it's more likely to be a machine-specific conflict.

There's a wealth of information in your Installation Log file every time you run either GE (in his case) or GMU (as I favor). I'd be combing through there for clues seeking whether there's a glitch noted during the initialization, download, or other portions of the update process. GMU users should locate SetupLog.txt in a location that varies based on whether you've (hopefully) migrated off WinXP by now. Probably something similar for GE users.

Unlocking Maps with a Product Key/Coupon Code

You can unlock map products online using an 8-character product key/coupon code included with your map product.

NOTE: An Internet connection is required for the following procedure.

To unlock your product with a product key/coupon code:

In BaseCamp, click Utilities > Manage Map Products.

Select a map product from the list, and click Unlock Online. The Unlock Maps page loads in your Web browser.

If the Garmin Communicator Plugin is not installed on your computer, follow the instructions on the Unlock Maps page to install the Garmin Communicator Plugin.

Connect your GPS device to your computer. For more information, see the owner's manual for your GPS device.

Click Find Devices. Select your device from the drop-down list, if necessary. The unit ID of your device appears in the Unit ID field.

Enter the serial number found on your device.

Enter the 8-character product key/coupon code found on your Unlock Certificate. Click Unlock Map.

You can use the unlocked map by selecting it in BaseCamp.

Just as a point of information ...

Garmin is phasing out the Garmin Communicator plugin and Garmin Express does not use it. So if you are using Garmin Express to update maps, the problem is not related to the Communicator plugin.

BaseCamp Required Garmin Communicator

The browser page launched via BaseCamp's routine to unlock the maps required Garmin Communicator, as I discovered since I use the NoScript plugin with Firefox and had to allow the action before the page could perform its "Find Device" to populate some of the required data fields.

If Communicator is phased out, it seems like the MyGarmin portion of Garmin's web site will also need a major revamp.

More Info

@ dobs108, as I mentioned, I tried the Basecamp online unlock procedure you outlined with no luck. MyGarmin already shows CNNT 2015.4 as unlocked. Adding the listed unlock code to Basecamp does not work. The original download was made using G.E. and Windows with the Garmin Communicator plugin installed.

@ Bayou Navigator, I agree with you about the problem being machine specific since my other two computers handled the download with no issues. I’ll try your suggestion and compare the SetupLog.txt files on all three machines to see if I can find the conflict.

Some good ideas here everyone, thanks for the help.

Good point.

my.garmin.com does still require the communicator plugin ... I hadn't thought of that issue.
