Viago/Kit Kat

Got a new Samsung tablet today.Using the KitKat operating system. I see some restrications on using SD Card to load certain programs to it.The problem now is that I can not load the Viago maps to SD Card.Aware this is a known problem with KitKat.Has anyone came up with a work around?

KitKat

My Galaxy Note 8.0 has KitKat and the Viago maps are on the SD. The KitKat was an update, and I also recieved a Viago update a couple of times, so I don't think I did the initial Viago install on KitKat. At any rate, it didn't give me a choice of where the maps went. The installer just put them on the SD card.

Maps

Same way on my Jellybean system for my Android phone.Went to card automatic. On the 4.42 KitKat it went straight to the internal.Have S4 Samsung tablet.Internet search comes up with one of the updates caused the problem. Suppose to get Lollipop update sooner or later.Would like to fine fix now if possible.Do you also have 4.42?

Yes ... 4.4.2

But like I said, I don't remember if the Viago map upate came before or after the 4.4.2 update. My map files are dated 11/25/14, so I assume that is when the map update came out. I don't know enough about android to know where to look to find out when the 4.4.2 update was applied.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I have Lollipop 5.0.1 and my Viago has:
Total 2.67 MB
Application 55.65MB
SD card app 0.00B
Data 480 KB
SD card data 2.61 GB

When I put Viago on I had KitKat and it did not go on the SD card. I don't know how or when it went to the SC card. I do remember having to re install Viago, not sure why , but that is probably when it went to SD Card.

It sure will not install to my Tablet using 4.42.Even copied and pasted from internal to SD card thinking it would work. But would not read it.No problem with my music on the card.Google search shows this as a problem.Pointing to Vendor having to update the app to allow loading to SD card on 4.42.

Some of had to reload Garmin Viago earlier because off line maps would not work when downloading all of North America.I changed to US and Canada and that fixed mine.Later on all North America started to work after re-downloading.Not sure if that may have been your reason to re-download?

Same scenario

I went through that exace same scenario Charlie. I was forced into installing US/Canada because it wouldn't recognize the full NA map after a software update. Then when the map update came out, I reinstalled the full NA and deleted the US/Canada. But all of these maps installed to the SD. So I am not sure what is going on with your tablet.

I am wondering what will happen with Viago when Samsung releases Lollipop for my Galaxy Note 8.0 (if they do). If it requires a reinstall of Viago, I hope it doesn't move the map to internal storage.

I have the Viago maps loaded to the SD card on Note 8

I have the Viago app on both my Samsung Note 8 and my Motorola Luge Smartphone, both are running Kit Kat 4.4.2 and in both cases I chose the SD card for the maps to install too and they installed there with no problem.

I also have the HERE navigation app installed in both and the maps installed to the SD card.

I just had to choose the SD card as the map storage in both apps.

Have you done all the updates to the tablet? The problem installing things to the SD card was when it first rolled out buy an update fixed that right away.

Strange

Not only are the maps on the SD card but all the supporting Viago files are also located there in a viago sub directory under the Android directory.

On my Samsung tablet the Kit Kat update was done long before the Viago app was installed and the Viago app updated after the install and still no problem putting the maps on the SD card.

On my Motorola smartphone that I bought back in Jan 2015 it came with Kit Kat and had no problem installing Viago or installing everything to the SD card.

Maps SD Card

Search on internet points to 4.4.2 release being a problem.Curious to what version you had during the time you loaded to SD card. This shows release dates but not sure how accurate it would be based on vendors.Looks like more updates out there http://goo.gl/wx7QAv

SD Card

Contacted Samsung for more info.

Thank you for contacting Samsung. With reference to your email, I understand that you're unable to download Garmin Viago Maps to SD card on your tablet SM-T330. I understand your concern. Third party apps don't have full access to content on SD card on devices running on Kitkat Operating system. This is due to normal Google Policy. Google prohibits the modification (write/delete/rename) of files in external SD Cards using 3rd party applications from Android KitKat OS Any attempt to modify files on the SD card using a 3rd Party application could result in an error. I hope you understand. We consider your comments as a feedback. Samsung strives to provide the most up-to-date and quality products to all of our consumers. We always appreciate the feedback and ideas of our loyal customers, and are glad to go over any ideas that could improve our products! As a Samsung customer, your opinion is of the utmost value.

Just wait until all Android

Just wait until all Android tablets and Phones (Samsung S6 for example) no longer have SD card slots. Tsk, Tsk. No more putting that bad 3rd party "memory" in your devices.

Sounds like Android tablets are becoming like Ipads, and Android phones will be like iPhones.

Nope, now they can charge more for your devices, because they are giving you lots of "good" internal memory.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Both my devices were android 4.4.2 when I installed Viago

The version of Kit Kat 4.4.2 is the one that was either on the phone when I got it or the one and only version that was updated to my note 8 and there has been no update to the OS since then.

You understand that android does not allow the installing of any apps themselves to the SD card but if the app allows the option all the supporting and data files can be stored on the SD card. I have found that all apps I have installed to date that have large data files all have had the option to store the data on the SD card including Viago, HERE, and Navigator. Even all the camera apps allow to choose either internal memory or the SD card to store photos and videos that you take.

With Viago the app itself in not very large, only 28mb's and is stored on the main memory but when you install you have the option to store all the supporting and map files to the SD card.

That is exactly what I did with both my Samsung Note 8 tablet and my Motorola Luge smartphone and they were both running android 4.4.2 when I installed Viago on them and in both cases the supporting files and maps stored on the SD card. The apps them selves stored on the main device memory but as I said the app is actually pretty small. The phone install was just done in late January when I got the new phone.

Yes, I understand. I have

Yes, I understand.
I have Android 5.0 installed on my Samsung phone & I see that some apps will not install "data" to the SD card when they give you an option.

It's the future path. The apps will stop giving you a choice pretty soon because no OS will allow it in the not to distant future.
