Up Ahead.

How far ahead does the nuvi find services? Anybody knows?

It

It isn't really "up ahead" as the Nuvi will find items that are north east south and west of your current location.

I'll admit I haven't used this feature much but just doing an experiment on my 3597 I notice that it appears to display items from a fair distance away. For example in my test route the screen shows a restaurant 1.5Km to my west but if I tap that entry 6the screen will not only display details about that entry but also 6 more places to the east of me as well as approximately 45 more to the south (my test route is mostly driving south) with the farthest one away being 30Km. That test is in a built up area.

Simulating a route that starts in a remote area to my home I see restaurants and banks that are 60KM away.

Also note that as you drive the list continually updates both distance and items listed.

what do you mean

What do you mean when you say "up ahead?" There are a couple of possible answers to this depending on what you are asking. If you mean searching along a route or near a specific location, then the answer is the closet 50 locations. If you mean the next exit as found on some units, then it is as it states, the next exit off the Interstate.

I'll guess it's this on the OP's 2557:

Up Ahead

What I meant was when I'm drive down a road how far ahead it would find places but what t923347 said they could be all around me.

Thanks CraigW for the link. That explains it.

The difference I saw from the video was the "Up Ahead" app searched the built-in POI for locations that were up ahead on your route. That was also the question asked by a_user when he asked for more information.

Searching Custom POI you are given 3 choices, around your current location, along a route or around a distant location. The app works like "along the route" as it requires an active route be programmed into the unit so it will search for locations that are near your route of travel that are within a mile or two from the road. Searching near your current location will return results like T923347 stated, the 50 closest to your current position in any direction. Searching around a distant location works exactly the same, it's the 50 places closest to the point you specified.

Not having used the Up Ahead app on my 3597 I don't know if it searches only the built-in POI or if it includes custom poi as well. Perhaps someone who has used the Up Ahead app can tell us if it requires a route as shown in the video.

Yes they could be all around you but they will normally be on, or fairly near, the route you have entered (the destination you have entered). That's what I meant in my example when I said that my test route was mostly driving south and the majority of reastaurants being shown under "Up Ahead" were south of my current location.

The youTube video linked to above is a good example of how Up Ahead works. FYI, I just tried another test route and it's showing hotels 150Km away, so about 100 miles.

On my 2557 Up Ahead I have gas stations, rest areas and restaurants. I simulated a trip in I-75 where I know there are at least two rest areas. Up Ahead showed gas stations and restaurants but no rest areas. Hmmmmm. I wonder why not.

My

My guess would be that the Nuvi is only reading the built in POI data and the rest areas your looking for are not in that map data. It looks from my experimenting that the Up Ahead feature only reads built in POI data and not custom POIs.

I guess the other possibility is that both the rest areas your looking for are on the south bound side of I-75 and your simulation is using the north bound lanes, or vice versa. I doubt Up Ahead would have you making U-Turns on the Interstate. laugh out loud

And considering this is Garmin were dealing with it's possible that rest areas just don't work with Up Ahead but I'll do a little more testing at my end.

Update - Rest Areas do work. I simulated a route from Palm Springs CA to Phoenix, AZ where I know there are 4 rest areas. All of them showed in Up Ahead. The farthest away from my start point was 200 miles.

I was heading south and the rest areas are on the west side but Up Ahead doesn't show them. I will do some more testing.

Update. OK, it's working now. I changed the symbol from rest area to banks and back to rest areas and now it's working. Thank you.
