Choosing a Mass Storage.

When I want to change my Nuvi 2557 to mass storage I have two choices. Mass storage and Mass storage single session. What should I pick?

What is "mass storage?" A new GPSR?

One is permament other is one-time

Mass Storage will keep it in the mode until you tell it otherwise.

Mass Storage will do it that one time. If you want it in Mass Storage mode in the future, you will have to select it again.

I think you mean Mass storage single session.

One thing for the OP to remember is that if you select Mass Storage, the Nuvi will remain in Mass Storage mode as mentioned. The problem with that is that it exposes the .system folder with all it's important files (including map files) to accidental deletion, etc. Selecting Mass Storage single session will mean the .system folder becomes hidden to the computer OS when the Nuvi reboots which is a much safer configuration for some folks.

It's probably preferable to use single session but I don't because the next time I need Mapsource to recognize my device I will have to remember how to reselect the correct setting and I always forget how to find the settings...lol.

That explains it.

That explains the difference between those two modes. I will keep mine in Mass Storage Single Session mode to be safe.

Thanks for your replies.

One More Thing To Mention

The default mode is MTP on many (not all) of the newer models, this will hide the System folder.
If you change it to Mass Storage it will remain that way as mentioned.

But if you do a hard reset which brings the Nuvi back to default settings, you will need to change the MTP mode again to Mass Storage mode to view the hidden files.

To see units with MTP mode and how to change settings see this link,

Thank you member charlesd45 for posting the information.

BACKUP

Regardless of whether you decide to do Mass Storage or Mass Storage Single Session, once you are in Mass Storage mode, please IMMEDIATELY do a BACKUP.

A backup can save you countless hours of grief.

Plus, a backup can give you important information about your device when things begin to get flaky - like you get tight on space.

If you have been following the thread
Request Input From Nuvi Owners With Voice Command (URGENT)
you will have learned that it is entirely possible to have old ASR (voice recognition) files left on your device.

We are glad that so many members are able to gives us details from their device's current state as well as what the device looked like before recent updates. Hopefully we will be able to discover exactly what happened to cause a device to have 800-900 MB (or even 1600-1800MB) of files LEFT on the device.

Regardless, to free your device of these leftover files, you will have to put the device into Mass Storage to delete them and free up space.

AS always - before you muck around with your device PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP.

MTP/Mass Storage Windows vs Mac

Having a dual-boot Mac with Windows7 added a level of confusion for me until I found these notes.

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={2c197420-8419-11e1-6a4c-000000000000}

"Some automotive devices use Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) for connecting to your computer. MTP provides a more secure environment for the important system files on your device.
MTP connectivity requires the following:
Windows XP with service pack 3 or later
Windows Media Player 11 or later
...If the above system requirements are not met, or you are using the device on a Mac, the device will connect to the computer using standard mass storage mode instead of MTP mode."

Here is where I have a problem. I have a MacBook Pro, mid 2012 with Yosemite. I have a Nuvi 2597. It will not connect to the Mac in Mass Storage Mode. I cannot see the .system file, nor any other file with a . suffix.

When I open the /Garmin folder, all I see is the Diagnostic folder and the GarminDevice.xml. After disconnecting the MTP page still shows Mass Storage, but it's not. I finally had to start Win7 in the Virtaul machine to go look at the .system/ASR folder.
