Why don't Car Mfr's in Dash Navi Systems use Garmin Maps?

Garmin's maps are way better than what comes standard in any automobile. IMHO.

Does anyone legitimately know why?

There would have to be a BIG

There would have to be a BIG incentive for ALL car makers to only deal with one supplier. And even then the other GPS makers would cry foul and probably sue.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

actually

Many do use maps from HERE, Garmin's supplier. Go to Here's website and look through the models for which they provide maps. You have to realize Garmin buys raw map data and the customizes it to fit in the Nuvi line. Auto manufacturers do the same.

.

It's about money and contractual arrangements.

It all depends upon what the makers are willing to spend and also what the map suppliers are requiring.

yeah.. and so there!

Like putting in all the locations for places to eat, sleep, get gas, money and the list goes on and on..

Of course, they don't put in fishing or pot holes sad

But they put so much crap on the screen it becomes a challenge to see the map through the ad's

How sad!

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

Then they couldn't charge

Then they couldn't charge for map updates frequently!

HERE supplies maps for Garmin and many of the car Mfg's maps

HERE that supplies the Garmin maps also supplied the same exact maps that are in my GM built in nav system. The disc that held the update came directly from HERE.

The built in POI's in the GM version comes with twice as many POI's as the ones that come with my Garmin maps on my 3790LMT.

Chrysler and Jeep not only use the same maps they also use the Garmin software and interface.

the easer to get updates the less likly you'll buy from dealer

$149 to Nissan versus $69 to Garmin, which would you go to for update?

That's easy!

It's not a hard decision for me.

I think the maps are often the same, however, the presentations are frequently different. The presentation in my GMC Acadia is better in some ways, worse in others. I'm still learning the GMC though, whereas I've had the 855 a long time.
I know the GMC software is different than Garmin. GMC and other auto companies are using the same basic software, (similar to some mobile phones) but may come up with quite different presentations.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

Different

I agree with Not2Bright - it's not necessarily a better system, just different.

After eight years of playing with a Garmin I am very comfortable with its processes. Entering an address of searching for a POI seems "logical" with the Garmin. Entering an address in our Taurus Nav system seems frustrating by comparison - probably because that is not how I "learned" to do it.

But the biggest difference is the inability to add my own POIs and having to pay $169 for an update mad

Nissan vs Garmin

There you go, the question can also be $149 to Nissan versus $69 to Garmin, which one would Nissan want on every one of their vehicles?

Toyota GPS

I have a built in GPS in my Prius and also a Garmin.
The built in GPS is also a radio, MP3 player, SAT RADIO, ONSTAR and backup camera. It has a bigger screen which can be split in two where it will show your direction of travel and position at all times. When traveling on freeways, Interstates or certain 4 lane highways, it will inform you of what services are at upcoming exits up to 15 miles ahead and also rest areas. It also has a JCV file which is faster and longer than the Garmin.
The only thing wrong with it is that one can not enter a several stop trip but maybe the newer ones address this.

My Frontier has a flip up Garmin tray

Nissan had a 750 that was programed for Nissan (couldn't operate while driving and opened with Nissan logo). They discontinued it years ago but I found a tray and installed it on my 2011, I'm running a 765 in it no. Like it better then the stock Nissan in dash on my wifes Juke.

Some do, some don't

When I bought my 2013 Wrangler Unlimited they offered two different in dash GPS systems, one was Garmin based and one was not.

. 2 Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S, Nuvi 2689, 2 Nuvi 2460, Zumo 550, Zumo 450, Uniden R3 radar detector with GPS built in, includes RLC info. Uconnect 430N Garmin based, built into my Jeep. .

2012 Susuki Grand Vitara

has a flip up panel in the dash which houses a concealed, removable Garmin Nulink 2390. It uses a Suzuki welcome screen instead of the Garmin Standard screen. The unit snaps out of its housing and connects to a PC via USB. POI's and map updates work the same as with other Garmin units. No lifetime map updates are available for the 2390 though. You have to pay $79 for each update.

If you bought a regular 2390

It would be eligible for maps, Had Nissan 750 that would not allow use of screen while driving, changed to 765 and worked like real Garmin
