On board Garmin in a 2014 Durango

I just purchased a 2014 Durango, and it comes with a Garmin Navigation System. I will keep my trusty 1490 with lifetime maps, just in case.

But I've got a couple of questions already. The owners manual seems to leave out any information on using the nav system. Since I bought the car used, maybe there is some other documents I'm missing.

1. I got the set a home location screen, and there is a text box there, but I can't seem to find a way to set the home location. I'll try again tomorrow.

The salesman at the dealership told me the Garmin comes with lifetime maps. But I don't see any way to update the maps. Was he "blowin' smoke"? Or, is there a way to update the maps. Not too important now, but it would be in a year or so.

I presumed I should post this in the Garmin forum here, but let me know if this post belongs elsewhere.

Thanks,

Ted in Ohio

The

I can only assume your Durango uses the Uconnect system and if so the Uconnect manual can be downloaded from:

http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/

Select the model year and model (2014 - Durango) and a list of downloadable manuals will appear. There are 2 downloads available for the Uconnect system and the one listed as 8.4AN includes Navigation system instructions.

Maps for built in Nav systems are often updated via SD card or DVD. Following the Map Updates link on http://www.driveuconnect.com/support/dodge/ would indicate that no updates are available for the 2014 Durango maps BUT for a 2013 model the update is on DVD and costs $149. I could find no indication of life time maps updates being offered.

2014 Durango

I bought a 2015 Chrysler 200 and the salesman bragged about the in-dash "Garman". The map was outdated and I contacted Garman to update it. Long story kept short, the in-dash GPS system in Dodge, Chrysler or Jeep products are not a Garman. Map updates for the Uconnect system are infrequent and not free. Keep you trusty 1490T. I found the large GPS screen a good place to put the suction cup mount of my Garman.

Not So

Not so! The in-dash Nav system in most Chrysler models is from GARMIN and use Here(formally Navteq) maps, the same map supplier as Garmin uses for their Nuvi models. Here is the direct link to order map updates for your Chrysler vehicle, although no updates are available for your 2015 model:

I have to say that this is the best use for an in-dash Navigation system I've heard yet.

My 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has a Garmin based GPS (UCONNECT® 430N), looks and feels exactly like my other Garmin GPS's. That model year they also offered a more expensive GPS (UCONNECT® 730N) that was not Garmin based. Maybe that's the version you have?
