MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Students and parents in Robbinsdale Area Schools are getting a hi-tech way to catch the bus.

The district is introducing a web-based GPS application called MyStop, which allows users to track their school bus’ route map in real time, and gives estimated arrival times for individual stops.

The app can be used on smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers, and is updated twice every minute

MyStop will not be available to track buses used for after-school activities, and is not available for the FAIR School and private schools in the city.

Click http://www.rdale.org/pages/rdale/Departments/Transportation_... for more information on the app.

And what is wrong with them waiting at the bus stop?

Like we have all done. The bus eta times are generally good except when the students are late getting to the stop because they can't get up in the morning.

Bad idea. Really. Do you

Bad idea. Really. Do you really want perverts tracking that bus full of kindergartners and grade schoolers?

Really don't see the need

Really don't see the need for this. School buses here manage to keep pickup/dropoff schedules reasonably well.

And I'm not really concerned with perverts tracking school buses. Don't think that's realistic. No need to panic and toss out the "children safety" bait.

I see your point, but as cold as it gets here in Minnesota, I would prefer that students are outside the shortest amount of time.

I see this point, too, but finding and following a bus in the morning during a school year is pretty easy. I doubt that the ability to track it by a predator is a huge game changer. I suppose if that is a big concern, they could tighten up who has access.

I actually think that the ability to reduce the time that a student is waiting for the bus outweighs the threat of a predator doing online stalking.

I have a friend who is physically handicapped and confined to a wheelchair. He often tells me that the para transit provider that he uses runs one or two hours late. He suggested that they look into this app for that service. Given his residence and where he gets rides to, this would be quite h elpful to him.

Like many applications over the years, there can be pro's and con's. For example, the county that I live in has a website that shows the owners of real estate throughout the county. Some people were upset when they made that available online. The reality of the situation is the Minnesota Legislature determines long ago that real estate ownership data is public information. It just happnees that the website makes it easier for people to access.

My bus story.

A couple of years ago, I was visiting my daughter in the Twin Cities area. She was busy with some housework and asked me if I would go wait on the corner for the bus to drop off my grandson. He was in kindergarten at the time. There were a few other parents waiting there so I introduced myself and visited with them while we waited.

When the bus stopped, my grandson of course ran right up to me. The bus driver got off the bus and asked who I was. I told him, and he then asked my grandson if he knew me and a couple of other questions like "What are you and Grandpa going to do this afternoon?"

I shook the drivers hand and thanked him for being so observant and vigilant.

I used to drive a school

I used to drive a school bus. Actually the driver may have violated his school policy. In our system and in others around, if you aren't on the list of accepted people supplied to the school by the parents or guardian, I was not allowed to let you take the child, no matter how happy or familiar with you he was.

A child may be extremely happy to see his father, regardless of the fact that he may have a court order restricting his access to the child.

Unfortunately, today's society is not as friendly or as safe as it was during the time we grew up.

And how would a Bus Tracker App prevent that?

would have known where to send the police to get her

Again how? The app does not

Again how? The app does not track individual children, only buses.
