Bridge location

Doing some research ran across this information on Garmin Support.May come in handy as a avoidance to set up on gps for various reasons.Or just to locate a certain bridge coordinates.

How do I find a bridge with my automotive device?

In some situations it may be necessary to find a bridge on an automotive device.

To find a bridge, perform an address search on the device as usual 1, leaving the house number blank. When prompted for the street name, enter the name of the bridge. The results will now show the bridge.

1.For steps on how to perform an address search, refer to the device’s owner’s manual: https://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/searchManuals.fac...

Excellent tip, thank you!

Changing Routes

I wonder if the same procedure would work for other traffic structures, like tunnels (providing the tunnel is named)? It could come in handy when you're stuck in traffic and trying to find directions to another route.

Good catch Charlie

That indeed could come in handy someday, thanks for sharing smile

Good Find Charles. Thanks!

As you point out, the search procedure varies with the GPS’r. On the 3597 for example, you must first select the “Search Near” box and enter “A Different City” unless you are fairly near the search location.

To answer DanielT’s question, the procedure will also work for some tunnels like the Holland Tunnel and Lincoln Tunnel in NYC.

Even ferry routes are searchable using Charles’ procedure. A search for the "Staten Island Ferry" for example will yield locations for both the NYC terminal and the Staten Island Terminal.

Some major POI’s are also searchable this way. A search for the “Statue of Liberty” will yield locations for both the NJ and NYC ferry terminals. A search for the “Empire State Building” however will yield no results.

These results were obtained using a Nuvi 3597. Results may vary with other units.

In any case, it's a very valuable tool indeed! Thanks again Charles!

Golly, I never would have thought to look here for a Custom POI.

Thanks

Thanks, this helped me find a bridge location for a fishing spot here in Florida.

I've been using that POI (Bridges USA) for several years now and have used it a few times.

FWIW, I use the Bridges POI to "force" the Nuvi to route me via the crossing of my choice, rather than the Nuvi's choice. I select the bridge as a waypoint to add to the current route. That forces a route recalc.

Can be done on the fly (for example, due to reported traffic on the Nuvi's bridge selection heard on radio but not showing in NUVI traffic) by going to Extras, POI's, Bridges. That way you will see the 50 nearest bridge POI's in the file, and not have to do any bridge name "typing".

Thanks, I didn't think of that.

cool

I can wish for lots of things but, by some chance, is there a file with the bridges names spoken?? It would be educational to hear the name of a bridge before you got to it. "Approaching Ahwahnee Bridge" in Yosemite Vally, CA.
