Questions About CSV vs GPX Files (Basecamp won't import CSV)

I am using Garmin's Basecamp software to sync my waypoints with my Zumo 590. I am pretty new to this website. I just signed up a few days ago. I am unable to get any use out of the CSV files. The GPX files, when they are available, work just fine. But Basecamp will not import the CSV files or convert them to GPX. Does anyone know a way to convert a CSV file to GPX so Basecamp can understand it? I am kind of a rookie at this. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks...... Rick

welcome

Welcome to the site. There are several programs that will convert between file types, but a lot depends on the file you are trying to convert. The problem (or issue) with converting a CSV is there is no standard layout for a CSV. Garmin states the first two positions are for the coordinates, the third is a name for the coordinates with an optional fourth field called just description. It's the 4th field that causes the most problems with conversions.

Most CSV files have the street address, city, state and zip or post code along with the phone number. But not everyone includes all these elements and some still have additional information. That said, many here on this site use a program called Extra_POI_Editor written by a member that is no longer active. He maintained a site on wikispaces, but that site is now down. Some active members do have the installer program and have it available on various sites. EPE only runs under Windows, so you are out of luck if you are using iOS.

Check the FAQs and look under the learn tab, there is a wealth of information there. Ask questions and if you need a particular file converted, ask and someone will probably step forward for a file or two.

Try these program with various options to save as http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/poi_manager.php or http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input

Welcome

Welcome to the site.

We usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Note that the Learn Button will give you access to two valuable reference pages -
the "Index" to all of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Glossary of Terms and Links.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.
