How do I remove the Garmin Dash Disk

I foolishly applied the Garmin Dash Disk to my brand new Nissan Murano's dash. I decided that I hated it because the arm kept falling off. So I bought a Garmin bean bag, skid free device with the arm built in. It is awesome (On sale at Amazon for $27).

Now my problem... HOW DO I REMOVE THAT UNSIGHTLY BLACK DISK? Is there any chemical or process that will allow it to be removed without damaging my dash?

Disc Removal

If you're able to get "something" (screwdriver, finger tips, etc.) under the edge of the disc, try applying firm, constant, upward pressure on the disc. Hopefully, this continued pressure will cause the adhesive tape to start seperating from either the disc or dash. If it does, then try applying (squirting) naptha (lighter fluid) to the tape. In my experience, NOTHING works as well as lighter fluid for softening and removing contact adhesives of all types.

Good Luck!

Miki

carefull with chemicals

test them on a remote, unseen part of the dash first to see if the chemical will damage the dash...

Otherwise, just get under the edge with your fingers and lift - it should come off. Mine did.

Remove Disk.

Try Acetone or nail polich remover, which is the same as Acetone ( I think it actually "IS" Acetone.)

But like Keith said, try a little on a part of the Dash where you can't see it too well, just to make sure it does not affect the finish.

Acetone usually does not bother most surfaces.... BUT... it WILL eat many kinds of plastics.

SO BE CAREFUL.....

The only other things I can think of are anmother solvent liek "Goof-Off", but the same warning applies.

Tim

Sometimes, most adhesives

Sometimes, most adhesives will soften with heat. Why prying up on the edge, hold a hair dryer on it. Goo-off may work too. If not than you may have to resort to a chain-saw! No.... just kidding. It should come off with all the above suggestions.

Goo-off?

Something new?

I've always had good luck using a wrecking bar and sledge hammer. Just kidding!

Try Goo Gone

Goo Gone is another good product.

But as Keith said "test them on a remote, unseen part of the dash first to see if the chemical will damage the dash..."

Disk removal

I have a bodyshop, and believe me do NOT pry on it with a screwdriver. You will regret it. Chemicals may discolor the dash, or remove the paint/dye. Get out you hair dryer, aim it at the base and heat it up. Use a plastic putty knife or a plastic razor blade and gently work under the disk. Remove and excess glue by running your finger gently across it.

Heat (hair dryer) and dental floss...heat it up, slip the dental floss under and gently work back and forth...reheat as many times as necessary...also works taking off the little badges dealers put on the trunk of your car smile

Park the Car in The Sun...

for a couple of hours. Let the disk heat up. At that point, the disk will probably separate from the adhesive ring with just a little coaxing. Then, the adhesive ring can be pulled off. Rub your finger along the edge of the ring, and the ring should begin to roll up in a ball. Once you've got enough to hold onto, just pull it up. It might tear, but it will leave enough of a "handle" to continue the effort. I've done all of this, so I know it works.

Try squirting Goo Gone under it cause it is used to loosen up that type of adhisive and will not harm the dash

Man, I just grabed mine and riped it off the plastic dash.. However I did take the top layer of my plastic off but since it was all black, you cant really notice.

So just grab it and pull, There .. No chems or harsh anything to mess up your dash..

(and no need for "GOO-GONE")

GARMIN DASHMOUNT REMOVAL

I have had several of these "permenant" dashmounts, I dont prise them off I turn them either clockwise or anticlockwise this way there is no fear of lifting the plastic of the dashboard, it is hard to turn at the beginning but it only takes about a minute or so. I removed this off the dash of my Mercedes and thereis no mark left at all.

A heat gun and some fishing line or dental floss -- do not get it to hot--use the sawing action as suggested and it will come off and not damage the dash!

How to remove plastic disc from dash

I realize this is a older post, however with the holiday season just past, this is a renewable question and should be added to faq's

I will give this answer again for those that didn't read it in a different post I made.

Take two wrenches, two screw drivers it doesn't matter what they are, we are just going to use them as a pair of handles. You will also need about 18 inches of 20-30lbs test mono-filament fishing line.

Make several wraps of the fishing line around each handle, then starting at the back of the disc begin pulling forward and down toward the floor of the car slicing through the disc from back to front until it releases.

Clean up with Goo Gone or similar product per the manufacturers instructions and your done!

I would recommend not

I would recommend not sticking the disc to a dash on a car that you car about because it might be a permanent fixture in some cases. It takes a lot of work to remove and then if you tar the leather on your dash you will have to put one back to cover the tear. Improvise or use a friction mount would be my suggestion.

Preferred Method

Jack up all 4 wheels. Lean into car and grasp disk firmly with fingernails. Have 2nd person lower jacks and VIOLA, disk removed!

LOL

P.S. Even though this thread is older than dirt, kudos to you for searching before you posted, and not starting a new thread on the same topic.

How I did it

I made the same mistake with a new car and removed the disk. I just grabbed the edge with my fingers and very slowly pulled it up. Then used my fingers and a wet rag (only water) to clean up the residue. No damage to the dash and it cleaned up easily.

Same problem here

I had the same problem on my Toyota.
I just went out on a hot day after it had been there heating up in the sun for several hours and just grabbed the edge and slowly pulled it up. Then I used regular cleaning wipes to clean off the rest of the sticky left over.

Sell it with the car

I just left mine on there when I sold the car. The next guy has a nice spot already for him.

As for me, I bought a pack of 2 more on eBay.

Stevek8n9 has it right. Heat is the best and safest way to remove it without damaging the dash.

The cure...

My old StreetPilot dash mount has been on my 4Runner for 5 years. Needless to say, it was firmly stuck.I am now using a beanbag and needed to remove the permnent mount. I finally pried it off, but a huge glob of goo glue remained on the dash. Much of it was removed with a small plastic putty knife...very carefully. However, the surface glue remaining needed some additional help.

I tested all the stuff mentioned above on the goo glob and none of it would attack this substance. So, I went to the Internet to search for a solution. I got a hit...from Garmin, much to my surprise. They say to use plain ole alcohol to remove the glue. It's works like a champ and will not attack vinyl material. After cleaning off the junk, I applied Armor All vinyl cleaner and conditioner. The dash is now like new and the glue left no footprint whatsoever. Just a FYI.

Also, I second those saying to be careful with high powered chemicals, such as acetone. That stuff is nasty.

Remove Dashboard disk w/o chemicals

After looking over all the comments here, I sorta combined several suggestions into a successful non-chemical solution:
1. Applied heat to the disk with a hair dryer for about 5 minutes
2. Took a ~2 foot length of thin-gauge wire (28g? - otherwise try a guitar string) and wrapped each end a few times around a crescent wrench to create a pull wire with handles (think garrote).
3. Starting at the far side of the disk, pulled the wire under the disk using a sawing action to slowly separate the disk from the dash.

After about 15 seconds of sawing, I had pulled the wire all the way through to the other side, separating the disk from the dash. The adhesive on the underside of disk was trashed, but it was still hot and pliable enough for me to rub-n-roll it all off - didn't need any water, detergent, solvent, etc.

Was extremely happy with the results. In fact, with a little double-sided adhesive tape the disk can probably be reused.

Hope this helps.

If you had kept the heat on

If you had kept the heat on it, and started gently pulling one edge up, then applying the heat where it came up, you could have removed it clean and had a reusable disc.
