Why did Garmin eliminate the ability to customize the Speed Data field on the main map?

I just picked up a 2598LMT and was surprised to discover I could not customize the speed data field. I would much rather have a directional indicator or other information to go along with the arrival time that is in the other data field (which is customizable). I'm curious why this was "hard coded" into this version of the Nuvi?

.

The only ones who would actually know the answer to this would be Garmin themselves. They've made many, many similar decisions in the past regarding useful features...that they seemingly remove without rhyme or reason. Some (namely myself) believe that Garmin has a "feature dart board" that's used in the development process of the system software. rolleyes

Whatever their reasoning, it's making me VERY hesitant to upgrade any of my units (currently the 3790 & 3490) for fear of losing useful features that I am very used to using.

I've

I've owned and used a lot of Nuvi's. Were there any of them that allowed you to customized the speed field? I can't think of any.

There is probably a lot of visual customization you can do on your Nuvi's map screen that isn't readily evident. Although this FAQ was written for the 3597, I think it will probably apply to your 2598 as well:

Not knowing what mhowerton had before the 2598, it is hard to determine what exactly the question is. But since part of the post was " I would much rather have a directional indicator or other information to go along with the arrival time", it sounded to me like there was an expectation that "speed" could be replaced by some other field.

it seems to me that fossy and BarneyBadass are both commenting on devices that allow the user to "change" the "speed limit" on the display - which is not the "speed" (as in how fast is the device traveling) as I understand it.

The manual for the 35x7 series says on page 7:

Quote:

Changing the Map Data Field
1.
From the map, select a data field.
NOTE: You cannot customize Speed

Neither my 765 or 2595 allow any "customization" of " The Speed Data Field On The Main Map" as far as I can tell.

Which automotive devices display the speed limit indicator, and where is this feature available?

Many Garmin devices have a speed limit indicator that will show you the posted speed limit on most major roads and highways. This feature cannot be disabled, and is available in the following regions:

Europe
United States
Canada1
Australia
Middle East
Southern Africa

The models below that have the Speed Limit Indicator feature also have Speed Limit Error Reporting. This gives you the ability to change the speed limit in the event that it is incorrect or add the speed limit if it does not exist in the mapping. Some roads will have the speed limit applied in segments, so it may be necessary to change the speed limit multiple times on a singular road.

If one looks at the picture of a 2598 at:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/2013-...

it shows that Speed is on the left hand side of the map screen and Arrival Time is on the right hand side. Like all other Nuvi's that Speed indicator can not be altered/customized and the field that shows Arrival Time is customizable and varies depending if you have a destination entered in the Nuvi or not. To me, this would indicate that the OP is referring to the normal map screen display.

I agree that the OP is not talking about changing speed limits on a devices that allow for that but is talking about altering what type of information is displayed in the field on the map screen that is called Speed. To the best of my knowledge you can't do that on any Nuvi.

If our assumptions are correct, I think the OP will find that the FAQ I referred to in my first post will give him the type of display options he is looking for on his new GPS.

The Op is correctly referring to the 2 information fields as Data Fields according to all the Garmin manuals. In all the Nuvi manuals I just glance through the data field that displays the current speed you are traveling can only be used to access the GPS internal "Trip Computer" and can not be altered to display anything other than your speed. The other field may be altered to any of the items in the Trip Computer.

That being said, my zumo 665 will allow for changing both data fields.

the simple answer ...

Because they could

Because they found out customers were using it

Because the Garmin techs couldn't figure out how to use it

How?

What can you do that will "customize" the "speed" data field?

2012 Prestige

You can certainly do this on the 2012 Prestige series nuvi's (34x0, 35x0) by creating a custom dashboard. This is not a simple setting though, and is rather involved. Explanation is here:

On the 1490, when a street didn't have a speed limit associated or the speed limit displayed was incorrect, all you had to do was touch the speed limit sign on the display and you could put in the correct speed limit.

If I remember correctly, I think a tech support person at Garman said they were gion to download the custom sppd limits and update map speed limits with the values entered from the users

Several of us thought this capability ("correcting" the speed LIMIT) was present in several models, but that the OP was implying that the speed data field itself could be "customized". I still do not think "customization" is possible - in the sense that some alternative can be displayed.
