How often does Garmin update the maps? Has anyone had success with having map errors corrected?
Welcome to The Factory
Welcome!
The official statement is that Garmin will update City Navigator North America up to four times a year. Over the past several years, it's always been four times a year and quite close to being every three months. Although no money changes hands (as far as I know), there's generally a bit of a discussion in a thread here about exactly what day the next update is going to occur on. See the first several pages of:

Yes, reported map errors have been fixed in future map updates although some/many reported errors may not occur in the very next map update or even the update following the next update.
If you find a map error, I do suggest reporting it:

First GPS
Thanks for the information. Just got my first GPS a couple of weeks ago. Will be doing some traveling for work now and I think it will come in handy. Found a great deal (I think) at Walmart on a new 2555LMT. It does more than I need but this was less expensive than the 55LM I was looking at.
Work travel

If you're travelling by car or truck, you may want to look into downloading and installing some custom POIs: RestAreasCombined, favorite restaurants or motel chains, redlight and speed cameras, auto dealer or tire stores, etc.
I do urge you to make a full backup of the files on your nuvi to a computer and to update the GPS to the latest firmware and map.
Tips
Thanks for the hints. Have already made a backup on work computer but will make one on my home PC as well. Already updated maps and firmware. Looking forward to taking my first trip with it.
Garmin listens to feedback about map and POI errors

I can tell you from years of experience with various Garmin models, they definitely listen to the feedback and correct errors. It can take time though just like any software takes time to test and build before releasing. I've definitely had success with that.
Garmin - https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces
Navteq Errors (now owned by Nokia "Here" maps) - the "parent" map provider of various entities including Garmin, Mapquest, etc. http://mapcreator.here.com/mapcreator
A lot comes from/depends on your local Gov
Most updates come from local as-built updates
I've Had Numerous Errors, etc Updated
I've submitted many errors or additions, but it takes time.
I went directly to Navteq, now here.com and outlined errors with any documentation that I could provide. It can take a year or more for them to respond, and sometimes, you have to resubmit. It then takes a Garmin another 6 months on top of that.
