nuvi 2557LMT (on sale today July 28 @amazon for $119.99) to replace working 660 / 680.

Hello!

Not sure if this is deal worthy enough to post.... At least for me it seemed inexpensive enough to bite and finally replace my nuvi dinosaurs that refuse to die. Most likely they will become "backup GPS units" should these new ones get stolen, misplaced or bite the dust.

I'm still living on a Garmin 660 / 680. It protests that my maps are woefully out of date every time it boots up. Since map updates cost $$$ I Always thought I would replace the entire thing when it stops functioning but it just keeps faithfully chugging along. Does it know its days as my No.1 are numbered?

MSN traffic has long since died however the FM traffic still shows up every now and then... Just not enough to be useful smile

Not being a Prime member and too cheap to pay $13 for expedited shipping I've opted for free shipping and am anxiously waiting for delivery... Will the fedex/UPS or ontrac guy show up this week or next?

Still need to research whether I can transfer my carefully cultivated list of favorites from the nuvi 660/680 to the 2557LMT.

Happy to write a comparison (old vs new) when the 2557 shows up!

When you purchase from Amazon all you will need to do is to login to your Amazon account and check Your Account - Your Orders, click on the order for the Nuvi and you'll be able to track it's delivery status there. I think you should also get an email with the link to your order and/or the shipping tracking number, so that makes it easy to follow the delivery status as well. We have an Amazon distribution depot near our home in the Phoenix area and normally get a "sold by amazon" free shipping item within 3 to 5 days.

Easy way to transfer your favorites to the new machine:

Copy the current.gpx file from the old unit to your computer (it's in the GPX folder).
Rename the copied file temp.gpx
Copy the temp.gpx file from your computer to the new Nuvi.
Reboot the new Nuvi and all your favorites should be present (note - they will probably be called Saved Places on the new GPS)
Delete the temp.gpx file from the new Nuvi once you confirm your favorites/saved places are present.

660

was a piece of junk imho. Ours broke and I think we paid $300 for it (I was resolved not to get a gps until they became 300).

The 2350LMT has quirks too, but has far outlasted it and cost like $160. I remember that 660 would simply freeze up, and nothing could be done to reboot except let the batter drain. One day the touch screen no longer worked.

YMMV - we've been lucky.... touch wood!

We have 3 x 660 / 680 that are still alive and kicking! They have been around since mid/late 2000s. One in each car and the 3rd stays in my laptop bag for business trips - had a routine where I would turn it on as i'm walking (or bussing) to the rental car - it does look a little silly holding it up! By the time i got my keys it usually acquired the satellite signal so all i had to do was punch in the hotel address and go.

The one in my car (gets the most use) no longer holds a charge so it switches off as soon as the power is shut off but it still works great! FM traffic occasionally comes thru too on the GTM20! So...... we will now have 2 spare GPS units that we can throw around and won't care if they die or "accidentally" get left behind in a rental.
