An insider's strategy would be to do the Cities on the weekend and the country side/shore/trails otherwise. Most of the locals have either gone elsewhere or heading in the opposite direction. So you will pretty much have the region to yourselves.

NY seems to have forgotten it's summer this year.
Because of the "Polar Vortex" that smacked us this past winter, I expected an equal and opposite event this summer.
But we got a break.
Only one or two days of 90 degrees for both June and July.
Bit of humidity.
But no heat waves like the past two summers.
