Garmin 2577

Just got the Garmin 2577 because I'm going to UK for a vacation and then plan to use it in USA from there on.
Can't get lifetime maps with 2577.
Is that a big disadvantage?
It came with Europe maps for about $30 more than the US only with lifetime.

You can buy/download the USA

You can buy/download the USA map and put it on SD card.

Lifetime update

Welcome to The Factory.

Can you confirm that your device is a nuvi 2577LT?

If it's a nuvi 2577LT (a device with a Transatlantic map and lifetime traffic update), I see a lifetime map update option for you:

nüMaps Lifetime™ North America & Europe

Part Number: 010-D0131-00

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/digital/maps/map-updates/numaps...

and under the Compatible Devices, it lists the nuvi 2577LT.

This update is not widely sold from what I see, so the best option may be to buy directly from Garmin as a download for $115.

Our Garmin Memory faq does not list the amount of memory provided to the 2577LT, so it may be that you'd need to add a SD card to the device to hold some future map update--I'd go for a 8GB SD card. This isn't needed right away--at some future map update, you'll receive a warning that there's not sufficient space to hold the entire map you're entitled to receive--and you'll be given the option of installing the map to a SD card or install a smaller map (missing some states or countries) internally.

Given that the device came with "transatlantic" maps and not City Navigator North America or City Navigator Europe, I'm not sure that the numaps lifetime update for North America will work on your device. If you want lifetime updates for just North America, you should contact Garmin Customer Service to confirm that the update ($70-85 or so) will work on your device. I do fear that this may be an uncommon question and it's possible that your Garmin Customer Service agent will not know how to answer and may guess--and if s/he guesses wrong, beware. The safest way to get lifetime updates for your nuvi is to buy the correct transatlantic update.

Have fun in the UK and be sure to drive on the right side (I mean the correct side) of the road!

Add on maps

you should be able to buy the map and store on SD card as mentioned and when you in the USA you can select the USA map and uncheck the UK one.

Also your gps may take a while to register you in USA once you come back so let it take its time.

Just make sure the SD maps are compatible with your unit as you dont want to buy a map that wont work.

Sometimes it may be cheaper to buy a separate North America unit as there are some as low as $99 and with lifetime map rather than spending money on a USA map.

Hope this helps.

A request

Here's a request, eamostafford.

With your nuvi connected to your computer, click My Computer and look for the nuvi. You should see something like "xx GB free of yy GB" for the nuvi. Once you have the yy, you'll know the capacity of your nuvi. Then please go to:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33586

and add a comment stating the size. Be sure to state your nuvi model, whether 2577, 2577LT, 2577LMT, etc. Given the size of North American and European maps, it'll be interesting to see if it's a 7-8GB device or if it may even be larger. Given that the North America map is just over 2GB and Europe, I think, is around 3GB, plus the voice-command files needed for voice recognition, I could see this device needing more than 8GB. If much less than 8GB, then I'd start wondering if the transatlantic map on the 2577LT offers less detail than devices with only North American or European maps.

Good Find CraigW

I was not aware the Lifetime Updates for both Europe & North America were available for the Nuvi 70 series that include NA & Europe.

As for Transatlantic maps that come preloaded, I believe this is just the name given and in fact they are City Navigator maps. I'm not aware of Garmin selling any other types of maps except City Navigator. A easy way to know is look at the Map Info page on the 2775LT, it should show both NA loaded maps as City Navigator.

If you look at the coverage of the 115.00 Lifetime purchase, it includes all areas of full North America & Europe just like the City Navigator NT maps.

Unless you plan on making more trips to Europe I don't think the 115.00 price is worth the Lifetime Europe update. I would only buy the NA lifetime Update at a lower price, perhaps looking at Amazon for even a lower price than Garmin.

Should you decide to buy the 115.00 download update, I suggest you call Garmin with some questions as CraigW suggested. I would ask them if this download will include future updates for the Junction View Files and Voice Command files. These files must be updated with each map update to for them to work.

Another option

Another option to consider if you can and would not mind return the 2577.

Get the 2597LMT. You would have the lifetime map updates for North America included. Get the Garmin European Map on SD card.

You can get a used European map SD card from Amazon for ~$20. Sell it when you come back from your vacation if you wish.

You could also try the OpenStreet Map for Europe/UK map for free:

From that link, the 21.97 plus 4.98 shipping is still a good price, however, it does not list the map version in the description. But if you click on "Details" on the right side of the screen it shows 2015.
Under "see more product details" it shows the item # as 010-10680-50. Doing a search on Google for that item #, some sights show it as 2014.40.

Interesting if you click on the vendors storefront link it shows another used Euro SD card for 21.86, 11 cents less then the 2015. That one states in the description as 2014, I would be leery of this vendor of what I would actually receive.

I would definitely contact Amazon before purchasing to get confirmation I am getting the 2015 map.

Take into consideration when buying a specific map on an SD card it can never be updated nor will it come with Junction View and Voice Command files.
Also should the card fail, you lost your investment. You CANNOT copy the map from that SD card to another as a backup since the map is locked for that SD cards serial number. It may never happen but just be aware of that disadvantage over having lifetime updates.

Good call. For me, I have no problem buying from Amazon where Amazon is the Seller or for vendors who use "Fulfilled by Amazon." For other vendors selling on Amazon, I check them out to the same extent that I check out ebay sellers. I may buy from them--or not.

Amazon Sellers

I too am a loyal Amazon buyer and agree whether shipped by Amazon or fulfilled by Amazon you can have peace of mind.

Looking at that vendor it is NOT "fulfilled" by Amazon so caution must be used.
Perhpas I was wrong in saying to contact Amazon for verification of map version since this is an independent seller, I neglected to see that when I looked at the link. I personally wouldn't buy from that seller.
