Dezl 760

This is a great GPS except for one fatal flaw.

Custom POI files are not usable. The manual says that they work just like they are expected to on other Garmin units.

These are the instructions in the manual:
1. Select Where to?>Categories>Custom POIs
2. Select category

It doesn't work like that. When you select Custom POIs it starts showing all of them from every custom POI file you have and will limit the number to 50 of the closest to the selected location.

This makes the unit unacceptable for me, and that's a shame because it has so much promise about getting real RV routes, and the display is just beyond words.

I'll call Garmin tomorrow, but if this can't be resolved, I'll send the unit back.

Good Luck!

Just off the top

Just off the top I'd suspect operator error in the way you have your source folder set up. Do you have it set up with subfolders or is everything on the root of the folder POI Loader uses?

I've been doing this a long

I've been doing this a long time with many Garmin GPS unites. I know how to do it.

Why can't you accept a Garmin bug? This is just to be a heads up for others before they spend $400.00.

.

Take it easy wil.

People are just trying to rule out all the variables.

Without you stating otherwise (with no other knowledge of you), we have no way of know how long you have "been doing this".

@Wil01: 50 of the closest to

@Wil01: 50 of the closest to the selected location isn't a bug. That is by design and Garmin won't change that. However, a little preparation on your PC's hard drive will make things a bit more bearable. On your hard drive, nest your POI files within folders, and then run POI Loader. The resulting .GPI file will retain the folder structure.

Example

C:\
C:\POI
C:\POI\Rest Areas\
C:\POI\Rest Areas\Rest Areas.csv
C:\POI\Rest Areas\Rest Areas Canada.csv
C:\POI\Historic Vessels\
C:\POI\Historic Vessels\Historic Vessels.gpx
C:\POI\Alerts\
C:\POI\Alerts\Redlight Cameras.csv
C:\POI\Alerts\Speed Cameras.csv

As mentioned previously, by design Garmin GPS units only call up the 50 closest items. Setting up the folder structure allows you to narrow down your choices a bit further. However, if either of these things are not satisfactory, then you do not want a Garmin.

I appreciate everyone’s

I appreciate everyone’s help, but here is directly from a phone conversation with Garmin Technical Support.

The Dezl 760 is supposed to work with Custom POIs like other Garmin units, but it doesn’t. With other units the directions are to put all the POI files in one root folder and upload that folder to the GPS with POILoader. Garmin verifies that if you do that with the 760, you can’t select any categories in the Custom POI function on the 760.

From Garmin, the work around is to have one Root Folder and individual Sub Folders under that for each POI file. Then upload the Root Folder with POILoader as usual. If you have 10 POI files you will have 11 folders – one Root Folder and 10 folders under that. I can report that it works very well. Garmin is passing this issue up to chain to get the 760 to work just like other Garmin units. I might add that the Garmin person was very helpful

With that issue solved, I can report that this is the best Garmin I have ever had. We travel in a RV, and units like the 3790 will try to take us onto very small side streets in many cases, and even on “Autos Only” roads. I have checked one RV route, and sure enough, the route now stays where it should – off busy side streets.

I have only used the 760 for part of a day, but so far, it is great, and you must see the screen to believe it.

Good Luck!

Your initial post wasn't

Your initial post wasn't clear on what was going on, which is why there was concerns that you had done something improperly. Your newest post finally clarified things.

What's funny is that if you read my post, it says to do what Garmin's telling you to do. The nested folders trick is something people on this site have known for years.

In any event, hopefully Garmin is quick in fixing your issue. smile

I have this unit as well.

I have this unit as well. So, using the example folder structure above seems simple. What about the stock poi file? Does it just stay on the unit in addition to the custom one? Or do I put it on the computer prior to loading the new set?

When you say stock are you

When you say stock are you talking about the ones preloaded with the gps? Those are buried in the map data, so the only way to updated them is by Garmin/Navtec updating their data.

Different models, different poi-layout

On my Nüvi660 I always put all .csv, .gpx and .bmp files in same directory on the PC. This creates 'Custompoi's where I can select the 50 (?) closest from *one* .csv/.gpx-file or I can select 'All'

On my Nüvi3490 I first had to create individual sub-folders each with one .csv or .gpx and a .bmp file. Also the 3490 did not show any of the pictures linked to the POI.

After a software-update, I had to put all .csv or .gpx and a .bmp files back in one folder to avoid an extra unwanted layer. And (much needed) the pictures were back on the unit.

On my 760 we are - at the moment - back to the requirement to put everything in individual subfolders. But - as it changed with an update on the 3490, it might also later change on the 760 unit.

But I very much need a comprehensive POI construction reference manual written by Garmin.
As you know - a bug is only a bug if it does not follow the description. With no description - no bugs!

I just bought the dezl and have the same issue. With my 2460 and 1490T they showed alpha and any folders showed to open and choose.
I wish I saw this post before. I just made a new one about this. Sorry for not seeing it.

I'm a little puzzled on how to exactly do this and what will be the results.
Maybe a screen shot of how the folders will look before POI does it's job?

Dezl looks good

I just watched a video of the Dezl on youtube, Active Lane Guidance looks impressive.

I'll have to download the manual and check this out, if it has a car mode (along with a truck/rv mode)I just might trade in my aging 765T.

Larry

It does have car mode. I

It does have the Automobile mode. I like it so far. The 2797LMT is $100 cheaper but doesn't have the Dashboard optons for data like th Dezl. Maybe not the Button option either.
The buttons on the side of the map screen and also the dashboards are good for me. Easy to Navigate on busy business trips.. In my SuperDuty Ford the Dezl is large but I use Ram mounting to get it over the front of the dash then down some what so it's below the hood line and not interfering with the view of the road. Even with me reclined back on a quiet highway.

Solution to Custom POI Loading Issue on Garmin Dezl 760LMT

I found a solution to this issue - add a shortcut to custom POIs on the menu yourself and it will load by category. It's strange to me that this method behaves differently from the one stated above but it does work much better this way with the categories appearing first and then once a category is selected, the closest ones appear first. This worked for me and eliminates the need to do a bunch of folders and organization at the file level.

I use the automobile mode but it is so annoying to me that you have to click Agree every time you get in the car! Why can't they just make a Garmin Nuvi with a backup camera input like they used to? Interestingly, the 2797LMT and 760LMT appear to be exactly the same hardware and body; the only thing that is different is the mount that is provided. Switching it for a 760LMT mount still doesn't allow the camera to work because the 2797LMT model does not have any backup camera software installed so I am told by Garmin.

I've been using it alot

I've been using it alot lately. I like it very much. IT's fast, easy to navigate within. I'm getting use to the different menu choices. I can't wait for the cradle from Ram to come in a couple of weeks.
I bought a power socket/lighter socket from Bike Master and like it alot for use with this unit. It has a on/off switch on the socket and dull green light on it so you know it's on. I turn the Dezl on and off with this switch.

Good to know I'm not the only one using it on a motorcycle. I didn't want the size, necessarily, but it is the only one offered with an external speaker socket. Now that I have it, with the extra volume the speaker isn't needed, but I won't give it up. I still have a Nuvi 760 and a 63765T, but find myself moving this one between vehicles.

rest areas

Why would you need a Custom POI for rest areas, when they are pre installed.

One reason

One reason to install MrKenFL's Rest Areas Combined file to a Garmin device is that alerts can be set so that you'll receive an audio announcement alerting you to an upcoming rest area as well as to see if the rest area is open or is temporarily closed. I have a rest area alert set for 15,000 feet, well before the first "Rest Area Ahead 1 mile" signpost.

And another reason is the MrKenFL gives information about the type of facilities that are available as well as whether pets are allowed. Some have no facilities and it is nice to know that in advance sometimes when making a decision as to when to schedule the next pit stop.

They are more up to date than the pre-installed ones.

Garmin 760

I agree. Its annoying. POI Loader doesn't even recognize the 760. The Garmin tecs at the Garmin store in Chicago said I need to use Basecamp and I still cant do it. The start up says you can do it but I cant narrow it down in the help menu.

OK I resolved my POI Loader problem. I needed the newer version.

I found a similar problem. I transferred my custom poi file that worked perfectly on my Nuvi 760. On the Dezl 760 it would only show 24 of 46 within 37 kms, 25 of 36 within 10 kms, 25 of 33 within 24 kms depending on the number of points in each Category. However by using the Enter Search bar with the Search near function then all the custom points seemed to be available.
Text relating to the custom point can be added between standard gpx comment and description tags. Pressing the i button will display the text.
