nuvi 855 Remote firmware

Got a message on my 855 today:

Updating Garmin remote firmware.

After turning unit off/on, didn't come back.

Comment(s)?

Sleep?

I see a few Google references to this message with several nuvi models, sometimes associated with a freeze. You may want to see if any relate to your experience.

The 855 has not had any firmware update for a very long time so the issue is not a failed new update from a recent WebUpdater or Garmin Express run that had a delayed start.

When you say 'After turning the unit off/on, ..." do you mean the power switch that normally puts the unit in sleep mode--or do you mean you removed the battery and replaced it causing a full reboot? If you haven't removed/replaced the battery, I'd try that first.

If you do a battery removal/replacement, carefully note what you see (if anything) displayed so that you can tell us what series of screen displays you saw, especially if it doesn't complete a full reboot to a normal functioning device.

If there's a chance you battery isn't fully charged, I also suggest giving it a good long charge first.

If your nuvi still doesn't fire up and if it still can connect to a computer and show the files present as an external drive, look to the device's \Garmin\RemoteSW folder and tell us what files are there along with the filedate and sizes. We can compare your results to my still-functioning 855. I have three gcd files, two undated (original to the nuvi when shipped?) plus a file 006B073300.gcd dated 12/29/2009 of 307KB.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the good

Thanks for all the good advice Craig.

Just turned power off/on, my initial reaction when I encounter an anomaly.

Battery was fully charged at the time.

Only file in RemoteSW is:

006B073300.GCD, 313,548 07/01/2013
