Saving favorites on computer then uploading to a new gps

I need to refresh my memory on how to save favorites from a 1690 garmin to a 2555 garmin. I need the step by step method please. Thanks in advance.

Favorites

Use this process to copy from one and send to other. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36164

Saving

Just plug in your old GPS and if you have Mapsource transfer your waypoints to Mapsource.

Then plug in the new GPS and again using Mapsource transfer the waypoints to the new unit.

That's how I would do it anyway.

Should not take more than 10 minutes.

I avoid to use BaseCamp so can't say if that works there too.

It takes

It takes about a minute and half to follow the procedures in charlesd45's post above. Copy current.gpx from the old Nuvi to your computer, rename it, copy the renamed gpx to the new Nuvi, boot the new Nuvi and favorites will be restored. You should take the extra step of deleting the renamed gpx file from the new Nuvi after the favorites are restored.

Only there are many people who when it comes to using Windows Explorer, copying and pasting a file and then renaming it are LOST. They just do not have the knowledge.

How true that is

Just had one of my techs MOVE a file from a location instead of COPY it. Later that day I got questioned "where is the file". Thats when I realized the earlier tech removed it.

Maybe but the procedures that charlesd45 linked to (actually canuk's creation) has every mouse click etc. detailed in it. Pretty hard to go wrong following those procedures and IMO a lot easier for anyone that is "lost" than downloading and installing Basecamp or Mapsource and then learning how to use it, just to copy one file from one GPS to another.

I think Windows Explorer is the easiest way to copy the favorites rather than use Basecamp or Mapsource.

The only thing I see missing in charlesd45's link ( canuk's instructions) is that once the current1.gpx is copied to the new GPS it should be deleted after the Nuvi booted and added the contents to the current.gpx file.

If the file is NOT deleted, you can never delete those added favorites from the Nuvi since on every reboot the information will always be added again.

Use Garmin Express

I've mentioned this before in another thread, I know a lot of members here have reservations about using GE, but at least for transferring favorites, it's easy and works flawlessly.

Connect to your computer the device you want your favorites transferred FROM.
Open GE, click "Device" tab, scroll down to backup device. Disconnect when it's done, takes only a few moments.
Connect the device you want the favorites transferred TO. Click "Device" tab, scroll down, click transfer favorites.
That's it, it's done.
One thing, if you've never used GE for both devices, you'll need to add your device(s) to GE before doing this. On the upper left corner of GE main screen, click down arrow to add device.

I never

I never think of doing that. GE would be a pretty easy way to transfer favorites. Thanks for the reminder of this useful function.

The thanks should go to you for composing the FAQ, I merely adding a small bit of polish to it.

GE for transferring files--2016 change?

After much hair puling and head scratching, I found that GE can fight you without telling you why.
I wanted to move all the stuff from a 2597 to a new 2797, and hooked both up at the same time.
GE shows "From: 2597" okay, and has a drop down box below to choose the new GPS. But it never highlights.
FINALLY, while both are hooked, do the backup from the old one and the transfer box will now work correctly. Then another drop-down box on the right to select what to move.
This may be another Garmin change. Dunno. I've never had this happen before. When I went from the 1490 to 2597 it was just an option !??!?!??

Thanks for the info. Good
