Geocoding With EPE

When using EPE to geocode addresses, there are certain procedures to follow so as not to lose work or what you have started since TurboCCC has not fully fixed EPE yet.

For starters, after filling in the "Address" field, then clicking "Geocoding" and a pop-up box appears with the message "The requested search did not return any relevant result", just click OK and manually fill in the Longitude and Latitude fields using other geocoding sources then click "Geocoding" and not "Grab", and wait for the same pop-up box to appear, click OK then "Grab". Otherwise, If you click "Grab" first, you'll get the pop-up box that says "Run-time error '91': Object variable or With block variable not set" and after either clicking OK or just close it, EPE closes without saving your work. In other words, always click "Geocoding" first before "Grab" under any circumstances. The temporary workaround or, for insurance, is to save your work after each and every entry where EPE saves a copy up to where you left off. I learned it the hard way.

My results

Let me provide an address for you to play with

Address:     64 Cottage Way; Panama City Beach;    FL;         32413
will code if             entered             entered          entered       entered
will code if             entered             entered                             entered
will code if             entered             entered          entered
will code if             entered                                   entered       entered

My testing with v5.91 reveals that all of thes will geocode.

What I did was to open EPE and then click on the "Add New POI" button at the bottom left of the upper left pane. This will open the "POI Edit -" dialog.

I entered the above 4 POIs calling them

Test one two three four
Test one two four
Test one two three
Test one three four

respectively.

I would click the "Geocoding" button in the middle of the right pane and got the map of my requested location.

Other combinations gave me the message
"The requested search did not return any relevant result"

Once I had the "map" of the location, I would click on the "Grab" button at the top of the dialog and the coordinates were filled in.

I would then click the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog and my POI would be created.

Now Try This

I understand where you're coming from, but what I'm concerned about is this. There are times or addresses that EPE won't geocode whether it's a typo on your part or the address is just all wrong, or whatever else. You don't always get the map of the requested location. After opening EPE then clicking on "Add New POI" button, type and try this name and address with phone number:

Name: Test
Address: 250 Pavilion Pkwy, Fayette GA 30214, 770-719-5257

I don't know about your EPE, but on mine (v5.91), I would get the message "The requested search did not return any relevant result" after clicking "Geocoding". Now, after clicking OK to close the box and manually filling in the coordinates taken from whatever source, say: -84.439874, 33.480157 and accidentally click the "Grab" button instead of the "Geocoding", you would get the runtime error and everything is gone! But if you click on the "Geocoding" button as what's required, then you would get the map with the coordinates and all's well. That was what I was talking about. I hope I made myself clear. Thanks for the feedback nonetheless.

Try this

do not put in a number on Pavilion Parkway but all the rest.

It will geocode and "grab" gives -84.442977, 33.479537

I don't pretend to understand why, but I have never had a problem with EPE (and this version) when I have built the POI files that I have submitted.

I actually think the city ought to be Fayetteville but that is beside the point.

Jo-Ann Fabric

When I look at this on Googlemaps, I see that there is a Jo-Ann Fabric store in this location. Since I did GA back in March, using EPE, this must be something new with the Google API Turbo uses.

I will continue to look at this.

Critical point

@nats50 - I did not read your post closely enough the first time to get the critical point. My bad.

I think the critical point is to NEVER click "Grab" until EPE has filled out the map in the upper right pane.

It seems that there are several ways to make that happen whenever one is required to find coordinates from another source. When I hit the "tab" key after entering the latitude, I got the map.

Same if I enter latitude and then click in the name field.

The trick is to click on anything other than the "Grab" button until you have the "Map" pane filled in. Then, you can move the location indicator to wherever it needs to be before clicking "Grab" to get more accurate coordinates.

Grabphobic

As the subject says, I developed a phobia regarding the "Grab" button. There was a time that I was manually typing in addresses and stuffs and after already having more than a hundred pois or entries, then came this one address that EPE failed to geocode. After typing in the coordinates taken from other sources then clicked "Grab", the dreaded Run-time error 91" popped up and I lost everything! Occasionally, I still hit the "Grab" button first by accident. sad

Now, for my insurance, I try to save the file after each entry. I'll try to remember and experiment whatever you have discovered yourself. Thanks for your time.
