Until recently I had put complete faith in my device, but a week ago events left me puzzled. Without going into details, the route Garmin chose was completely inane. For a 60 mile trip, it was 40-50% longer than the route I would have selected, and made no sense at all. I updated the software approximately June 1, and as far as I can tell the maps are stored on a micro SD card. Anyone have any suggestions?

This is usually caused by changing an avoidance such as adding avoid toll roads. Check the avoidances you have checked. For me, the only things I have checked are seasonal closures and unpaved roads.

This is usually caused by changing an avoidance such as adding avoid toll roads. Check the avoidances you have checked. For me, the only things I have checked are seasonal closures and unpaved roads.
Other less likely issues besides the avoidances could be a switch from automotive to pedestrian mode, an odd myTrends or eco setting, a switch from fastest route to something else, etc.
I agree that I'd look to avoidances first, especially if the route could include things like toll roads, ferries, unpaved roads, etc.
@Spyder_man
Welcome to the site. Hopefully, the comments above will solve the odd routing problem.
And, we would be interested in knowing what you determine to be the solution. It helps us to know as many of the odd things that can happen to a unit so we can, perhaps, remember them when someone else posts about a similar problem.
To newcomers, we usually recommend the following.
There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.
To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.
So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.
Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.
The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

Avoidances. Custom road avoidances may need to be re-set

From Garmin Support
What are the navigational avoidances on my Garmin nuvi, LIVE, dezl, Camper/RV, or zumo device?
04/10/2014
Garmin devices have an Avoidance menu where you can select various options that will adjust how your device routes you. Items with a check mark beside them will be avoided whenever possible.
Note: Custom road avoidances may need to be re-set after each map update. Custom area avoidances should remain accurate and intact after updating maps on the device.

Available avoidances:1
U-Turns – The U-Turns avoidance will avoid taking you on a route that requires a U-turn
Highways or Motorways – The Highways or Motorways avoidance will avoid highways, Interstates, freeways, motorways, and other major routes
Toll Roads or Tolls and Fees – The Toll Roads or Tolls and Fees avoidance will avoid toll roads and certain specified congestion zones
Traffic – The Traffic avoidance will route you around traffic problems if a quicker route is available, provided you are using a traffic receiver with an active traffic subscription2
Ferries – The Ferries avoidance will avoid taking you on a route that requires a ferry crossing
Carpool Lanes or Car Share Lanes – The Carpool or Car Share Lanes avoidance will avoid routing you on lanes designated specifically for carpooling
Unpaved Roads – The Unpaved Roads avoidance will avoid taking you on unpaved roads
Custom Avoidances – Custom Avoidances is a feature available on some devices that will allow you to select specific areas or lengths of road to avoid. For a full list of devices on which this is available, and for steps on how to use it, please view the following article: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={0f37d3e0-5440-11dd-f529-000000000000}
Please note that devices will only avoid selected items when it is possible. For example, if you have U-Turns selected as an avoidance the device may still direct you to make a U-Turn if an alternate route is not available.
1Not all of the listed avoidance options will be available on all devices. Avoidance items listed here that are not on your particular device cannot be added.
2Disabling the traffic avoidance does not disable traffic alerts from appearing on the device; however, it will not take the reported traffic incident into account when calculating routes.
Why does my nuvi, zumo, LIVE, RV, or dezl device route me off highways and through small side roads?
04/10/2014
If a device calculates a route that guides you off of a highway and onto small side streets, this could be the result of a navigational setting on the device. A simple adjustment may resolve the issue.
If the device's route preference or calculation mode is set to Shorter Distance, this may cause the device to guide you off of a highway in order to navigate a more direct route. Setting the route preference to Faster Time may make a difference in how the device calculates a route.
Another setting that can be adjusted on the device is the avoidances. If highways or motorways are checked, then the device will avoid them when calculating a route.
To check your device's avoidances and the route preference or calculation mode, follow the steps outlined in the article below:

Now
After having done all the above suggestions, if it still acts the same, then do a hard reset.
A hard reset is strongly recommended with every software update.

Just the one route?
Was it just the one route that was weird? Could it be something as simple as the map update missing a road or something?
Your Waypoints
Perhaps you could give us your waypoints and we could run it on our units and see what we get.
