should dash cams be required on all cars?

The technology is readily available, and backup cams will be required.

Wouldn't a dash cam video clearly show if you ran a light or didn't? So if you plead not guilty, it's required that you provide the video, or you are automatically guilty. To the contrary, you didn't run the light, you provide the video, and you are given a mandatory $50 gift card to Starbucks.

Also, I had an altercation last week and even told the person I got your plate. They even stated, "What are you going to do, try to claim we hit your car? F*** you."

The context of the altercation was these ****** ******* were harassing me for getting gas in their neighborhood (bad area). I do that because premium is 7 cents less there than the next cheapest. When I ignored them, they threw a bottled water at my window and so I put the window down.

not your responsibility

It's up to the prosecutor to prove your guilt, not you prove your innocence. The video from your dash cam wouldn't be needed if they can't show clear evidence you were in the wrong. Use your video to cast doubt on their claims.

(Besides, I don't like Starbucks. I think their coffee is burnt and bitter.)

Dash Cams....

They could help you or they could hurt you. If you're in the right you win. If the video showed you were in the wrong it could easily be used against you. The opposing side could easily get a subpoena and then you get to shoot yourself in the foot.
No thanks.

Dash Cam...?

I think 'ALL' interactions with LEO's should be on video exclaim

After all, it's your word against theirs... especially when you're doing something 'legal' and they say differently wink

Internet of Things

The internet of things is coming or should I say it's here! and some cars already have cameras in front to sense collision, lane drifting, etc. It's only a matter of time before they all have it and the black box in many modern cars already maintains this data I'm sure.

Autonomous...

When my car drives itself, it can record all the video it wants...

But until then, I'll respectfully decline.

And don't give me the "what do you have to hide, citizen" line -- that's not what the country was founded on.

Also please to remember Cardinal Richelieu:

If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged.

(yes, I know it's disputed. the principle stands.)

Required?

That implies that all existing vehicles would be forced to purchase one.

If you thought that you have to worry now about taking your GPS out of your car when parked to avoid a break-in and theft, think what it would be like with these mandatory dash cams!

only one side to a story

But there has always been two sides to a story, simply because there was no way to get at the truth. Today there is. Isn't there a camera inside of a NHL goal? Because either the puck crossed the line, or it didn't.

No Thanks

These days, the government seems to be using most data it gathers about us -- both legally and illegally -- primarily against as as opposed to using it on our behalf. Remember, these are the folks who want to track our license plates as we drive around the country.

I say "no thanks", let's not create video and data about ourselves that has a much greater potential to harm us than help us.

I'm not much for

I'm not much for "mandatory" anything, including seat belts, since it can only harm you, it should be a personal choice, although, I do think we should all wear seat belts, I don't think it should be legislated. I am in favor of dash cams but not forced by law.

Nice to have, not mandatory

As others have said, it would be nice to have a dash cam, but I would very much prefer them to not be mandatory.

I would also prefer them to not be accessible through any networked portions of the car. I would not want a video that it would be possible for others to hack. It would be nice to have cameras to monitor and record any interaction with police officers.

REQUIRED for All Vehicles --- No!

There have been a number of stories in the media demonstrating the value of having a dash cam recording some incident. But that does not mean that cameras should be mandatory on all vehicles.

Dash cams are not safety devices (yet) and will not prevent a crash or an altercation such as described by the OP. The only benefit I see in these situations is that cameras MAY support determination of fault - and often, are not even good for that.

If someone feels more comfortable or safer with a dash cam, I am all for them installing one. But I see no valid reason for REQUIRING dash cams on all vehicles.
