Are Redlight Cameras declining in number or increasing?

I wonder if anyone has kept track of the number of redlight camera locations as an indicator if they are still increasing in number or if they are decreasing.

I have seen numerous stories lately where cities that had installed them are removing them due to losing money ion them

In my area, two that were at major intersections are now gone and two more are scheduled to be taken down at the end of the year.

In Tucson area speed cameras are decreasing

So far this year they have removed 11 speed cameras in the Tucson/Pima County area.

There own study determined that the accident rates were dropping faster in the areas without speed cameras than the areas with them.

You've Got to be Kidding.
Last night we saw videos of a host of buses (including school buses) driving right thru red lights. The authorities should, & will be ticketing their stupid drivers for endangering the public & students.

BTW, the Washington, DC area has amongst the highest red light & speed cameras in the nation.

I wonder if there is a correlation with corruption and the increase. Here in the capital state for corruption they are increasing in Chicago and decreasing in many of the suburbs.

Ohio considering RLC Ban

Ohio's Supreme Court is now receiving legal arguments from both sides in the controversial red light camera debate. Their decision, expected by the end of the year, could result in a ban of those cameras across the state.

Lower courts have stopped these traffic cameras in cities like Toledo and Cleveland, but the Columbus cameras remain in use. I think the cameras remain in place, but no citations are being written. I think the POIs on POI-Factory still have these camera proximity warning...have to check

Glad you asked

I've tracked a few data point for US RLCs, guess about the same - but from the news I'm seeing seems will be declining. Tried to past the Excel file in but did not display well, so will summarize:

DATE______TOTAL____CHANGE
12/1/13____3,797____---
12/25/13___3,798_____-8
2/26/14____3,879____108
5/7/14_____3,799____-98

Most of the changes came from NY.

In DC/MD area it is increasing with RLC and Speeding camera

So I think it is depending on the regions

Left Coast...

Numbers it the Silicon Valley area seem to be constant to slightly declining -- too many other revenue opportunities, I guess.

Don't know if RLC are increasing or decreasing, but I do know Speed cameras are starting to go up.

RLC plus or minus

Here in Riverside CA, several have been removed in the past few years, but the remaining ones have held constant over the past year.

Declining

On Long Island, NY They Are Increasing

More are being rolled out over the next few months. The counties of Nassau and Suffolk were originally authorized 50 each. They are now authorized 100 each. Mind you Nassau is about 1/4 the areal size of Suffolk though the eastern half of the county has a much lower population density.

Autonomous cars--

A note from the Department of Unintended Consequences points out that the advent of autonomous vehicles will pull the rug out from under many of these enrichment (oh, sorry -- "public safety -- think of the children!") rackets.

speed traps, red light cameras, talking on a cell phone -- hey, talk to the driver, and that ain't me!

Increasing I think

I think it is still increasing slowly, but I am hoping it will start going down. I am glad some places are banning them, but more need to do the same.

Unfortunately in the case of RLC's and photo RADAR, it is the owner of the vehicle cited not the driver so any mistakes made by an autonomous vehicle will be paid for by the owner.

For the moment, speeding will not really be an issue since the top speed of the autonomous vehicles is 25mph. Granted a 20mph speed zone would have you 5 over and I suppose they will eventually start ticketing that.

Written into Pennsylvania law concerning RLC's is that if the owner can prove they were not operating the vehicle at the time they don't have to pay the fine. It's also written that the owner does not have to disclose who was driving.

just post speculations please

Lets just post speculations, "I think"s, and personal biases. It's not like we have a database of most of the cameras across the nation that is kept fairly up-to-data that the maintainer (or any downloader) could just consult to see what the actual trend is. And it is nearly impossible to get a line count for a simple text file, which would petty accurately reflect the number of cameras.

Go ahead and count them...

I posted an "I think" because I don't download the file every week and when I do, I usually delete the old one, so I didn't have anything to compare other than trying to remember how many POIs got loaded in the past. You would really need to have a number of the files over time and look at them to come up with a definitive trend. If you have this info, please share.
