Quoting from their website, the first Straw Hat Pizza opened in San Leandro, CA in 1959. It began franchising in 1969 and now has numerous locations in the United States. The company is in growth mode, poised to open new stores in Canada and the Western United States in 2008, along with launching a new, full-service line of eateries - Straw Hat Grills. Called Straw Hat Cooperative Corporation, the company is not a typical franchisor, but a cooperative made up of each Straw Hat pizza restaurant owner. Each restaurant represents one share of ownership.

Straw Hat Pizza: a traditional family restaurant focusing on pizza, oven-baked sandwiches and fresh salad bar. Straw Hat Grill: 3500 to 5000 square foot restaurants offering gourmet pizza, burgers, salads, and unique beverages. Straw Hat Pizza Express: a fast paced outlet offering core menu items specifically for take-out and delivery. Their specialties are Gourmet masters pizza, Hot Hat Stuffed Sandwiches, Garden Fresh Salad Bar, and their motto is "Genuine California Pizza".
