I figured the GE Version number would be in the trillions by now

I figured the Garmin Express Version number would be in the trillions by now! Or...whatever comes after a trillion!

Just downloaded GE direct from Garmin a few minutes ago on May 16 at 12:15pm and clicking on the file, selecting "properties" then "details" it tells me it is GarminExpress v.3.1.9.0

I got the same result a couple times yesterday. It seems that the fresh download/install of GE will be 3.1.9. Then with 3.1.9 running, you have it check for updates and it'll find the newest update.

I see that the Garmin Forum still lists 3.19 and the most current GE as well:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?85438-Garmin-Expres...

I have purged GE from my PCs and hope never to have to use it again.

Did you

How did you download it? If you update using the "check for available updates" link on the settings screen of GE it should just download and install the updated. At least it did on my computer, but I was already at 3.1.8 or 9 when I updated.

Thanks I'll do that.

But have the same problem getting MapUpdater, all I seem to get is GarminMapUpdater v.3.2.2.
Maybe following your suggestion for GE, MapUpdater will also self update?

No.

MapUpdater is not tied to Garmin Express. You will find the link to download v3.3.3 in the Cloning FAQ. Or are you on a Mac? I think the Mac version is different from the PC version.

Easy Update

This was an easy update. No issues at all. New file updated to 3.2.4. A plus to the update is that the Extras tab works and all the Garage items show.

Problems

I had GE 3.1.8 on two computers. On both, loaded GE then went to settings in upper right corner. Downloaded and tried to install 3.2.4.0. The old laptop with Vista, loaded and did the update. However, desktop with Windows 7, downloaded then for install 'failed-try again?'. Tried 4 or 5 times. Backing out of GE then try again. No luck. Will try again tomorrow.

Win7 Success

@jbees60

I had no issues with my Win7 laptop. Have you tried uninstalling your current version, reboot and try a clean install?

Hope that works for you ...

This is similar to my results

Your results are a lot like mine. My Windows 7 PCs have never had an issue with a fresh installation of GE. Once installed, and this has occurred several times for me with several versions of GE so it wasn't a 1-time fluke, when I'm alerted to or manually check for an update, the GE update process fails with a "try again" option. Trying again always fails. What's worse is that the update attempt goes far enough that now my existing GE can't be uninstalled. My update attempts have been tried using the regular update process, update as Administrator (even though I have administrator rights through my normal login), and compatibility mode. I tried the Run as Administrator method because my GE update failures showed an error of Insufficient rights to update Garmin Core Services error before the failure/TryAgain? notice.

What I finally found to resolve this was to download from Garmin the Garmin Express program as though starting from scratch and installing it. It usually will install. Then to be safe, I reboot the PC, and finally go and succeed in uninstalling GE.

Let me know if you ever succeed in the update of an existing GE (what you tried repeatedly yesterday with no success); if you find that after that failure, can you uninstall GE; and finally, will a fresh download/install at least get you back to being able to use GE or being able to uninstall it.

In the meantime, note that many here (including me on three nuvis and two PCs) have had success with the map update by using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express.

If I ever need to install GE again (or heaven forbid, try to update an existing GE), I may turn off my Windows UAC (User Account Control) in case that's the hang up, even thought I'm already using the lowest level of UAC, one step down from the default option.

It is odd, as many folks have piped in (and will probably to this message, too) that they have no problem at all updating GE on their Win7 PCs.

Downloaded 35 min ago, and

Downloaded 35 min ago, and it is V3.1.9.0 for W7-64

After updating maps, I Un-install Garmin Express...

And once I hear the next map is out from the folks here, I go to Garmin's Site, which prompts me to download the latest Garmin Express...

Using this procedure, I've not had any issues...

P.S. I'm updating SD cards, not Nuvi 660 (though the SD cards had the 660 ID on them)

I'll download and give it a try.

Well, isn't that special rolleyes ! He reports that it didn't fix the problem of the lost DEM file and I found that it didn't fix the problem of not being able to install the map to my computer.

When you are working with GE, what else is running on the computer?

Who knows?

Nothing in the foreground. But who knows how many background tasks are running?...GE for sure sad , Norton Internet Security, WD Backup, my UPS battery software, and most likely a dozen or more others.

My solutions are:

1) If at all possible in the future, continue to use WebUpdater and GarminMapUpdater and never ever ever install Garmin Express again.

2) If #1 fails (due to Garmin no longer supporting it most likely), follow the JanJ method: install GE fresh right before doing a map update, do map update, immediately uninstall Garmin Express.

Lots of work

WOW! Tried to update again but 'failed'. I turned off the User Account Control. Failed. Then tried to uninstall and IT failed. Tried again and was successful to uninstall. Reboot comp. Old GE had been uninstalled. Looked up GE and tried to install as new setup. It showed 3.1.9. FAILED several times. Reboot comp again and another fail.
Went over to wife's comp, same as mine, win 7 64 bit(no previous GE install). And it did install correctly. Showed 3.2.4.0. I put her GE installer on a thumb drive and load it onto my comp. Finally it loaded OK on mine 3.2.4.0. I guess things are OK now.
Things shouldn't be so difficult. Thanks for the suggestions.

I agree with your two points CraigW, and might add

3) To protect your device use the cloning method to install any map update.

For the moment I have left Garmin Express installed. If and when Garmin ever irons out all the 2015.10 issues, I want to try both Mapupdater and Express to verify that the problems are resolved. I will then uninstall Express and hope I don't have to install it again.

Don't know if you saw another recent post I made, but I did find a work around te needing Express to register a new device. So maybe we can avoid Express a while longer.

It seems that Garmin is pushing people away from their products. I will take heed to the several suggestions!!

Updated Garmin Express on Windows 7 64 bit

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64.

Checked version of Garmin Express - v3.1.8.0

It said a new version is available - clicked on "download." It was uneventful. I now have v3.2.4.0

Rick, it seems to me the install to computer failure is caused by a 2015.10 packaging error and not Express...

As reported by hercegovac, the CNNANT2015_10Update.msi file (needed for the install) is not downloaded by Express (because it is missing from the manifest file). See my post in the 2015.10 update is out thread for details.
