MTP and Mass Storage Devices - When use one or other?

Per your links, the model 2797LMT uses MTP method to communicate with the pc.

By default, this model is already set to MTP. So I do not need to change to Mass Storage mode.

First of all, how is one supposed to know if their unit is MTP or MSM?

It is interesting that Garmin once told me thatI had to put my unit in MTP for a particular task. Unable to follow their instructions, they came back and said that my unit did not support MTP. So now I "assume" that my unit is ONLY - MSM.

Now as for being in MSM so that system files are viewable, that isn't the case for me in using Paragon Backup. The app will not recognize the drive. Actually, it shows the drive, but no files to back up, but it does see the SD card. I have tried three other backup apps and they all find the drive. Also, Win7 has no problem in seeing all the files and copying them to the laptop or SD card.

So it seems that Garmin needs to standardize their file system.

If the 2460 in your profile is the GPS you're asking about, it does not use MTP mode according to the FAQ.
