POIs Loaded vs. Displayed? (Garmin Zumo 660 and BaseCamp)

I have loaded several POI files, the latest has 184 entries. I wanted to verify that they were all there.

Q1: How many can I see on the GPS? (zumo 660)
I go to Extras, Custom POIs, my file and get a list, ordered by distance. I page through it and no more than 50 display. I get the same limit of 50 with a different POI file, all of which are much closer. Is that all that the GPS shows at any one time, the 50 closest? If I were in a different place I'd see a different list of 50, closest to that location?

Q2: How can I see the POIs from within BaseCamp?
I can't seem to drag or import .gpi files into BC. Do I need to make a .gpx file? (and what is the cleanest way to do that?) OR is there a more direct way?

Thanks,
CJ

I can answer Ques 1 but not 2

Your GPS will display the 50 closest. Move to another location and you will again get the 50 closest. And that is as the crow flys.

Base Camp only displays what is loaded as Favorites or set up as routes, so no, you can't see your POI in Base Camp unless you do convert the file to a GPX.

The easiest way to verify all the locations are in your unit would be to run POI Loader against your source files again and note the number loaded. It will match the total number of locations you have in all the files.

You can use Extra_POI_Editor to view each of your input files, but it won't read a GPI file either. Check the FAQs on how to get, configure and use EPE.

BaseCamp

Actually, the newer versions of Basecamp will dislplay Custom POI's from the .gpi file. Just plug your Zumo in and wait a few minutes for Basecamp to load and sync to the data contained on the Zumo. Then on the Basecamp menu, go to Find > Points of Interest. In the dropdown box in the right pane, you should find Custom POI at the end of the list. It gets these directly from the .gpi file from your plugged in device.

As I don't use BC much this was new to me.

BC POIs

alandb, I tried this with my 1450 with BC 4.3.1, both internal and on the card, and what I think should have been listed, is not. I did get some help in the learning curve on deleting favorites but I need to delete some custom POIs. They do not show up until >extras>custom POIs>all categories on the 1450. It is Qdoba (some kind of eatery?). I did load Dinners, Drives and Dives. I would like to delete that also. My book doesn't say how to do this. On my favorites, I can pick something then press 'go' and push 'press for more' and the map will come up with a 'delete', 'edit' and 'go' then I get to chose what I want. Not with custom POIs. What am I doing wrong?

Use POI Loader

First delete all POI's from your GPS using POI Loader and then reload only the files you want by running POI Loader again.

Right choice

Once I ran the POI loader, I could see that there are two check boxes. One to add new POIs. And another to delete POIs off your unit. Choose delete. Started 1450 again and it stated new extras found on card, and do I want to install them. Rest stops.gpi, etc. I choose no as I wanted to set different parameters. Restart 1450 and they were still there under 'extras'. Will do over. Finally realized that they are on the memory card. Choose that from drop down selection and they were deleted. Now will reinstall.
Thanks bdhsfz6

This is interesting because it does display some Custom POI from my 765 but none from my 2595.

On my 765 are two .gpi files. BaseCamp displayed data from only the first one.

AND, it seems to want to display only the Custom POIs close to wherever the center of the map is located.

Not being versed in BaseCamp, I was not sure how to expand the number of POIs (seemed to be the typical 50 nearest the center of the map).

Will play more with my 2595 to see why it would not find Custom POIs because it read the map.
