Door-to-door navigation, or point addressing, is a premium map feature found on some of our automotive GPS devices.

With door-to-door navigation, addresses are given a precise location, which gives you much greater arrival accuracy.

Over 80% of the addresses in our North American maps are included in our point addressing data.

The North American versions of the following models have door-to-door navigation:

nuvi 55
nuvi 56
nuvi 65

nuvi 2200 series (excluding the nuvi 2200 model)

Devices that are not listed above or that are preloaded with maps other than North America use logic addressing instead of point addressing.

Good find Charlie.

That is something I was not aware of either. It does help explain why some forum members have complained about address accuracy, while others with the same map version say the accuracy is good.

I will have to do some testing between my 3597 and my 855 with some random addresses to see if I can find any discrepancies.

I had notice some difference

I had notice some difference in new locations I have traveled to on the Nuvi 2597 being right or close on the mark.

Why does my Garmin device show an address in the wrong spot?

You may sometimes notice that your Garmin device indicates that an address is on the wrong side of the street or that it is further down the street than it really is.

This will be significantly more common in older devices that use logical addressing. Newer devices use point addressing (door-to-door navigation) to ensure greater accuracy.

Logical addressing assigns a general area to each address. For example, if a stretch of road is known to contain house numbers from 100-199, the placement of addresses along that road is interpolated.

This means that 150 would be placed in the middle of the stretch of road, even though it may be located some distance from the center since addresses are not always spaced evenly.

Wow

That is news to me as well. A great find. Thanks for sharing. It may be worthy of a faq since I can see myself wanting to refer to it in the future in replying to a user's question.

I submitted it already.

Looking forward to your comparison. They sure don't go out of there way to advertise this. This is a big change to me if the results verify it.

Living in a city of only about 60,000, I feared that I may be in an area with the 20% of addresses not covered yet. From about 10 miles outside of town, I told my 3597 to create a route to my address. My past nuvis (750, 855) used "logical" addressing and "thought" I lived about 4 townhouses up the street from my home. The 3597 took me straight to my driveway.

Admittedly, a tiny sample size, but I was impressed.

At least my logical units did manage to keep my home on the proper side of the street.

One last off-topic item about the 3597 and its ability to Search: I continue to be amazed at how well the Search--and Voice Command Search!--works. The 3597 so often is spot on with its finding when I wake up the Voice Command, say "Find Address, then speak xxxx N YYYY Lane, ZZZZZ Arizona." Also, searching for businesses is correct an amazing amount of time: "Find Place, XYZ" routes me to the location for local restaurants, hair cutting businesses, etc. Simply searching via Find Place is so much easier than having to go into submenus to select Place/Restaurants/Pizza, for example.

My Nuvi 2597 is very

My Nuvi 2597 is very impressive with the voice commands. They have came a long way on this feature. I like when you do search. It looks both in internal and custom pois.

I asked a surveyor about addressing and I guess he basically explained it the same as you only in a little different way. He said the mappers take a known set of coordinates on each end of a given street and figure the addresses in between mathematically but they also consider that all of the lots that go with each address are all the same size. According to most maps such as Streets & Trips it shows my block as going to 1972 when it actually only goes to 1958. That puts my address about two houses east of where it is.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Blame it on the P.O ?

I thought it had something to do with how the USPS assigns street numbers. I know if I navigate (or tell others) to #40 Main St, it puts me right at the end of my driveway even though I live at #42 Main St.

I ran some random tests of several family member addresses in different citys and states, comparing my nuvi 3597LMTHD to my nuvi 855. I used family members so I was familiar with the exact location of their homes. I have the same map version (CN NA 2014.4) on both units.

There is a definite difference between the 2 units. The 855 always puts the address dot on the road; usually of to the correct edge of the road where the property is located. The accuracy on some addresses was correct (or very close) and other addresses were off by as much as several hundred feet.

The 3597LMTHD in every case was spot on, and put the flag marker back off the street where the actual building structure is located.

So I have verified to my satisfaction that the "door-to-door" feature works as Garmin described in the article Charlie posted.

MAYBE GARMIN

Will fix the problem on the older mdl with a firmware update.

Possible, but unlikely. It is not unheard of, but very rare that Garmin adds features via firmware updates to existing models, especially to old, discontinued models.

Glad to here the feedback. Getting the same results on a few places I know were a little off on my 265 compared to the 2597.

Trip log.

Several of the places I checked I had visited recently, and the blue trip log still showed where I pulled into the driveway. So it was easy to zoom in and see that the address flag was placed at the exact location where the house is located.

door-to-door navigation

Check both my 2595 and 3590 on a couple of address that were off. Now they are right on the money, even the correct side of the street. My home address alway show several streets away, but,now it shows the correct location.

Looks like we have acquired a nice new feature based on what feedback we have gotten so far.

Just wonder how this applies to other vendors of GPS Products?Like on the Smart Phones and tablets.

quite impressed

Tried a couple of destinations today as part of my Christmas shopping with my 3597 with map version 2015.30.

Looked up a couple of Bed-bath-and-beyond stores in the San Jose Area, both with the built-in POI and with the FourSquare search (Samrtphone Link).

1. 515 East Hamilton Avenue, Campbell, CA 95008
2. 5353 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA 95118
3. 147 Great Mall Drive, Milpitas, CA 95035

Store 1 is in a small two-store building off a side street of the address shown. Store #2 is in a relatively large outdoor shopping center. Store #3 is in a huge indoor shopping mall.

I was quite impressed that the 3597 guided me all the way basically to the entrance of all three stores, even through the no-name private "alleys" in the parking lots!

Door to Door

The more I use the Door To Door navigation on my Nuv1 2597. I see the improvement compared to my Nuvi 265.Our last short trip was to Orlando FL to see attractions we had not been to before plus a different hotel. It was spot on for each location.I thought the Downtown Disney Marketplace would be the one that would be a problem. It directed me right to the parking lot.So far well pleased with this option.

My Solution

with older units if you go to the same address more than once. When you get there the first time, save it with the name you want when you're in the driveway. Next time use that same stored location.
Not as good as the new ones, but every little bit helps.
