Getting the best directions

I'm using the 40LM and consistently get bad directions. Not bad as it won't get me to the desired location, but directions that choose to take me on 8 miles of city streets versus continuing on the highway that would cut 10 minutes from the trip.

Any tips on getting better results from this basic Garmin?

Questions for you to start things off

Is the nuvi in vehicle mode (as opposed to bicycle or pedestrian)?

What is your routing preference: fastest, shortest, eco?

What avoidances are enabled on your nuvi?

If you haven't downloaded your owners manual, here it is:

Good luck.

Current settings

Thanks for the reply!

It is in vehicle mode.

I'm currently using fastest routing preference.

Avoidances are carpool, ferries, unpaved roads. I'm in the Chicago area, so I wouldn't think those 3 would have much affect, although I could be wrong.

Chicago made a deal with Garmin years ago

To route all traffic through city for revenue enhancement!

Bummer, I had hoped it would be a simple change in settings. Given that you're in toll-crazy Chicago, you could check and confirm that Avoid Tolls is NOT checked.

I assume you have the latest or at least a recent map version.

Unless someone can find a better solution, my suggestion is that when you know taking a highway is going to get you to a destination faster that you take the highways and let the nuvi recalculate the route automatically.

It'd also be interesting to see what happens with your nuvi in other cities outside of Greater Chicago.

Can you post a start and end

Can you post a start and end point of one of the routes that would show what it's doing?

Garmin facilitating fines, wouldn't be surprised

Seriously. Chicago tries to make money at every corner!

I'll see if I can add

I'll see if I can add example later tonight. Thanks

I updated at the end of summer, maybe? I don't have the most recent map.

I used the nuvi in Florida this early summer, around St. Petersburg and south of there. Seemed to work fine, however I wasn't at all familiar with the area.

I almost have to do a Google Maps directions before I get moving so I can help guide the nuvi.

I'll take another look at my preferences to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Thanks

.

You may also want to do a hard reset after you update to the latest maps. It clears any junk files.

Back up your nuvi first.
